Atari celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and it seems like the Atari 50 collection isn't the only way it is setting out to mark the occasion. LEGO recently unveiled an impressive new Atari 2600 set in partnership with the iconic gaming company, just in time to join in on the celebrations. And it already has us reaching for our wallets.
According to the store page, the set when fully built will be around 8x33x22cm and is made up of 2532 pieces in total. From what we've seen so far, it looks like a fairly compact build, but there are a lot of great details to admire.
First off, there's the console itself, which emulates the classic wood grain paneling of the original Atari 2600, and even hides an 80s-themed gaming room with minifigure, retro posters, and a boom box. Then there are some other cool features like a brick-built joystick, Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede cartridges to plug into your system, and buildable 3D vignettes for each of the three games. The set will cost you £239.99 in total and will be available from August 1, 2022, for those of you interested in getting your own to build and put on display.
Over the last two years, it definitely feels like LEGO is knocking it out of the park with its gaming-themed sets. In July 2022, it announced the long-rumoured Mighty Bowser set, in partnership with Nintendo, joining other remarkable gaming-themed sets like the LEGO NES. We're glad to see the Atari 2600 now getting the LEGO treatment, and we hope to see more classic consoles in the future.
