Every so often, we'll come across a game on Twitter that really catches our eye, and Donut Dodo is definitely one of those games. It's a single-screen platformer made up of 5 levels, featuring donuts, traps, and one angry Dodo intent on spoiling the fun.
From what we've seen of the game, it looks absolutely fantastic, with a lush 16-colour palette, and charming character sprites reminiscent of early Nintendo arcade games, like Popeye, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr. This makes it a perfect fit for those who want to get their retro fix.
According to the game's description, the goal is to run, jump, and climb across each stage as Billy Burns the Baker, outsmarting and outmaneuvering the flightless bird while collecting donuts. But why a Dodo? Well, we had to ask.
According to Sebastian Kostka, the game's designer over at Pixel.Games:
"It just came out like that along the way. I usually start with a playground: a simple setting with simple mechanics and work on that until it feels good. That set the tone and rhythm for the entire game. Once the playground was working, I needed a bad guy. So I thought about this really greedy Dodo. The game cycle was born."
Pixel.Games has been responsible in the past for other retro titles, like Sir Lovelot and Sigi, but Donut Dodo looks like its most polished title yet.
After completing each stage, for instance, there's a neat little audio flourish, where the text will reveal itself in time to the music. It's the type of polish you would expect from a classic Nintendo arcade game and is just one of the many features that help to set Donut Dodo apart from the thousands of other arcade throwbacks on the market.
Donut Dodo is currently available on Steam, iiRcade, and Atari VCS, with Flynn's Arcade and Pixel.Games recently announcing that a Switch port is on the way. What do you think of the game? Does it bring back memories of playing classic games in the arcade?
