Atari has announced that it will be releasing a brand new Atari 2600 cartridge this year for a game called Mr. Run and Jump (as reported by Gamespot).
Mr. Run and Jump is the work of Graphite Lab's developer John Mikula who created the game back in 2021. It focuses on a character named Mr. Run and Jump who must save their dog Leap, who has begun wandering toward the Dark Realm. The 2D platformer sees players travel across 6 worlds and 80 screens and features an interesting speedrun-type system where the character starts off with a score of 25000 and loses points based on each second that elapses or collisions with enemies.
As part of the announcement, Atari is calling this "the first cartridge launch for a new Atari title since 1990", though it's worth noting that in 2022 the company did release some limited-run cartridges for games like Yars' Return, Saboteur, and Aquaventure (which had all previously appeared on 2018's Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 3).
If you don't happen to still have your 2600 knocking about, you needn't worry too much, as a modern version of the game, developed in conjunction with Heavy Horse Games, will also be coming to PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, as well as Atari's VCS console. You can see some screenshots of this other version below:
You will be able to preorder the physical cartridge from Atari's website for $59.99 from the 31st of July, with the game expected to ship within 3 to 4 months of that date. It will come with a high-quality box, as well as an instruction manual.
