Update [Thu 1st Aug, 2024 14:30 BST]: Shane McCafferty has released his Game Boy Color-based Project Gotham Racing tribute, which is now known as Hoonigans.
"Hoonigans is a top-down racing game which pays homage to the classic retro racers of yesteryear," says the developer. "The aim of the game is simple: prove your worth as you tackle the game's diverse array of tracks and challenges, and earn medals to unlock a host of characters, tracks, vehicles, and more!"
The game contains twelve tracks, three playable characters, and a "huge array" of vehicles. "The gameplay in Hoonigans is incredibly straightforward: guide your vehicle around each track, cutting corners and avoiding potential hazards as you speed toward the finish line. The aim is to win the gold medal on each stage, allowing you to unlock additional tracks, characters, and vehicles as you progress."
Costing just one dollar, the ROM can be downloaded from here.
Original Story [Wed 24th Apr, 2024 10:05 BST]: Indie developer and part-time game design professor Shane McCafferty has had a long career in the industry, but his current jam appears to be creating cool little games for Game Boy hardware – and he's currently working on a top-down racer in the spirit of the Xbox classic Project Gotham Racing.
McCafferty – whose releases for Nintendo's 35-year-old handheld include Block Droppin and Starseed – has been working on the title for a while now and is slowly but surely adding in elements which made PGR so appealing back in the day.
During its prime, the Game Boy was home to many titles which might be considered 'demakes' in modern parlance; big-name brands such as GTA and Driver were released on the console, even though it lacked the processing power to achieve parity with the home console versions.
We'd like to think that, with this project, McCafferty is continuing the trend; we'll be keeping a close eye on this one, and we suspect many of you will, too.
