Update []:
The promised "full reveal" of Sonic Wings Reunion has just happened, and rather disappointingly, it was little more than a PowerPoint presentation followed by some live musical performances.
The game launches on May 29th, 2025 and is coming to Switch, PS5 and Steam.
Original Story:
Video System's classic '90s shmup series Sonic Wings / Aero Fighters is getting a brand-new game, it has been revealed.
Success – the company behind Cotton – is going to be producing this sequel, and series composer Soshi Hosoi will be returning.
A full reveal of the new game will take place on November 8th. 2024.
The first game in the series hit arcades in 1992 and was ported to the SNES in 1993. It would be followed by arcade titles Aero Fighters 2, Aero Fighters 3 and Sonic Wings Special.
The series would make a short-lived return on the N64 with Aero Fighters Assault, produced by Pilotwings 64 co-developer Paradigm Entertainment.

Very nice, I hope it stays near its classic gameplay. There were a couple sequels to old shmup series I’d read about but haven’t seen news since. I know I read Strikers was in the works someplace..
@NinChocolate This is being developed by success, who’s cotton sequels have all been great from what I’ve seen, so I think we’re in good hands👍
Hopefully it will be better than Sengoku Cannon on PSP
So not only is a good underrated shmup series returning, we will (well we already are, as seen in the Twitter post image) see the lovely Mao Mao again? Score!
@Coolmusic I suppose the stranger characters were the dolphin or Rabio and Lepus (two rabbits from an earlier arcade horizontal shooter titled after them, I can only imagine my local rollerskating rink as a child was one of the few places to get the US version of that, Rabbit Punch).
As a casual shmup fan who enjoys older, more forgiving titles and just can't get into bullet hell entries, the whole Aerofighters series is a treat. Short, bite sized levels combined with having a ton of different ships really scratches that fast paced arcade itch. IMO a great series for a more relaxed shooter experience.
Sonic wings is super super underrated as a Shmup series
@Azathoth I hear you, just not sure about "older games are more forgiving" - it really depends on the series. But this particular one in question, I enjoyed the classic games quite a bit so this is great news!
Hopefully with Success at the Helm it should be damn good 👍
You’re bringing back an old arcade shmup (one of the most niche genres) and that’s the presentation? So weird..
The fact that they refuse to show gameplay isn't giving me hope...
The lack of gameplay, even screenshots, is weird. To announce something like this with some some sketches and character art seems like it's way early. Still, they're fun games, a mainstay on my mame cabinet. I won't say I'm looking forward to it, but when it comes out and I remember this exists I'll probably buy it.
A Switch but no PS4 release? I didn't really expect it on any Xbox platform but going straight to PS5 is a bit odd.
