Nice! The PS3 versions only have minor changes such as new character portraits to avoid the similarity to celebs, and they translated the second one into English, so they’re obviously awesome.
Were there many other notable MSX games? Or games that had features exclusive to the MSX? Or was it more of a hobbyist machine
Were they available in the UK? I must admit that the sort of half PC-half console crossover period passed me by as I was very young/not born when some of these machines were released. I had family that owned Amiga machines (I later acquired an A1300 in my teens) but I never really heard of the MSX until the Metal Gear Solid games started coming out.
Yes, there were many! Konami was a big supporter of the system and produced loads of exclusives and unique interpretations of their classics. There’s an exclusive Snatcher RPG for example. A totally different version of Castlevania. The first Parodius game is exclusive to the system. And even beyond Konami, there are loads of great games.
And yes, MSX systems were released in the UK. I owned a Toshiba HX10 back in the day and loved it. I had lots of tape games but cartridges were more elusive and expensive. I had to wait till much later in life to afford those.
@Jellyscare oh cool, I knew about the Mega CD version of Snatcher but not so much the MSX version. Just looking on wiki now and it looks like the Mega CD version was censored. I might have to buy myself a CoreGrafx Mini to play it on! (When I have money or when it's on sale)
Thanks for the resources, I'll look over them tomorrow when I am at work. I think apart from MGS, Turtles and Simpsons, my main exposure to Konami lately has been in the Pixel Puzzle Collection app on Android. It's basically just Picross but with a Konami theme and it's pretty awesome. Great music in it!
Still hoping someone ports the official PS2/PS360 translations of the MSX Metal Gear games to the original MSX ROMs.
It can be done as a ROM hack fan translation, because the GOG port of MG1 and the PS3 ports were based on PS2 ports of mobile ports. And it shows with the heavily reduced framerate. The MSX2 versions have much better performance, but they at least have Easy Mode and saving without the need for the Game Master 2 for MG1.
Speaking of MG1, it has a homebrew Amiga port based on reverse-engineered MSX source code. And it's easily the best version of the game, if it had the official PS2 translation. But it only has the Japanese script, the old European English script, and fan translations to English and Spanish.

The 3DS looks best with the 3D Slider set to Full.
