Best Flash Carts EverDrives ODEs
Image: Damien McFerran / Time Extension

Flash carts have become a solid part of the retro gaming landscape these days. These wonderful devices allow easy access to thousands of titles all in one place and can be used to play pre-release prototypes, fan-translated titles, homebrews and other hacks on original hardware.

Once upon a time, there were only a few options on the market, but in the past decade or so, this has changed dramatically. Not only do we have flash carts for systems like the SNES and Game Boy, but we also have bolt-on options (such as the SD System 3) and Optical Drive Emulators (or ODEs) which perform the same trick, but with disc-based consoles.

Below are some of the recommended options, along with specs and comments.

Neo Geo Pocket / Neo Geo Pocket Color

NeoPocket GameDrive

Created by RetroHQ, the NeoPocket GameDrive cartridge works slightly differently from the other flash carts on the market. Rather than running the games direct from your SD card, it has 15MB of onboard FLASH memory, to which you can dump a selection of titles. You can then move these games back to the SD card to free up space, taking save data with them. Granted, it's not quite as elegant a process as using an EverDrive, but it's the only option available for the Neo Geo Pocket at the moment.

Neo Geo

Neo SD Pro (AES & MVS)

Terraonion's Neo Geo flash cart is available in both AES and MVS flavours and will be a godsend to those of you who want to play on original hardware but don't have bottomless pockets to purchase all of those insanely expensive physical games.

Note: Terraonion previously sold a standard Neo SD cart, which has since been discontinued. Also, the Pro model is currently out of stock.

SD System 3

The Super SD System 3 is a remarkable piece of kit which grants complete access to the entire PC Engine library. If you've always wanted to learn more about Nintendo's biggest rival in Japan during the Famicom era, then this system is the best place to start; loose white PC Engine consoles can be picked up online relatively cheaply, making the Super SD System 3 itself your only large investment on the route to HuCard and CD-ROM² heaven. Note that this product has now been discontinued by Terraonion, and has been replaced by the SD System 3 Pro (see below).

SD System 3 Pro

Saturn

Fenrir

This popular ODE (Optical Drive Emulator) requires some installation, but once it's in place, you'll be able to boot CCD/IMG, CUE/ISO (single files) and CUE/BIN (multiples files) from a MicroSD card. Fenrir is one of the best-supported Saturn ODEs and gets plenty of updates.

  • Support all models ! (20 / 21 / V-Saturn / Hi-Saturn / Tectoy)
  • Supplied with 20 and 21 pins flex ribbon
  • Model autodetection
  • Improved loading time with the SD card.
  • Support any microSD (and SDCard with an extender) of any size.
  • Easy to add games with the microSD.
  • Support .ccd/.iso/.bin and redump rips.
  • Support FAT32 and exFAT
  • Region free !
  • Support the Sega Saturn Movie Card

Terraonion MODE

This is an ODE which replaces the CD drive inside your Saturn and runs ISOs from a USB source (such as a thumb drive) or a SATA HDD. As such, installing the MODE on your Saturn does require you to take the console apart, which is worth keeping in mind if you're not very confident with that sort of thing.

The beauty of the MODE is that it also works with the Dreamcast and the PlayStation, so you could kill three birds with one stone if you own all three consoles.

On the downside, Terraonion insists that its products are tied to an online registration, which is irksome.

  • Compatible with both 20-pin and 21-pin Saturn consoles.
  • Auto region patching (loads games from different regions without patching games)
  • Auto detects the console it’s plugged into. No jumpers to configure.
  • SATA 2.5 HDD compatible with exfat (works with both hard drives and SSD drives)
  • MicroSD
  • USB for USB thumbdrives and powered USB hard drives
  • Compatible with Redump and Tosec images (for both Dreamcast/Saturn)

  • Supports Mpeg card, ActionReplay/PseudoSaturnKai, Saturn RAM cart compatible
  • DC Digital, DreamPSU and PicoPSU compatible
  • 32-bit MCU at 168MHz with 192KB RAM
  • High performance FPGA for accurate data transfer speeds
  • USB 2.0 High Speed PHY for high transfer speed from SATA & USB
  • Full speed Memory card interface supporting up to 12MB/s
  • SATA to USB 2.0 bridge for high speed SATA hard disk access
  • Saturn 20pin and 21pin interface with mainboard autodetection
  • User IO connector for expansion, and support custom interface boards
  • Reset generation and Region selection for Saturn

Satiator

Unlike the Terraonion MODE, Satiator doesn't require any internal modification, as it slots into the Video CD card expansion slot on the rear of the console. If you can live with a slightly less polished UI and don't mind missing out on Video CD support, then this might be the ideal solution for you.

Dreamcast

Terraonion MODE

Installing the Terraonion MODE on the Dreamcast is even easier than on the Saturn – you simply remove the GD Drive and drop the MODE in.

  • Compatible with both 5v (VA0) and 3,3v (VA1) Dreamcast (proper voltage level conversion)
  • Compatible with CDI, GDI, CCD, MDF, bin/iso+cue images
  • Plug and play, no soldering required!
  • 2 User interfaces: Simple list view and Advanced Cover Art
  • Supports multiple Disc games
  • Zero seek times providing faster load times
  • DC Digital, DreamPSU and PicoPSU compatible
  • 32-bit MCU at 168MHz with 192KB RAM
  • High performance FPGA for accurate data transfer speeds
  • USB 2.0 High Speed PHY for high transfer speed from SATA & USB
  • Full speed Memory card interface supporting up to 12MB/s
  • SATA to USB 2.0 bridge for high speed SATA hard disk access
  • Level translators to properly convert signal levels, and support Dreamcast VA0
  • User IO connector for expansion, and support custom interface boards

PlayStation

Terraonion MODE

The Terraonion MODE supports the PlayStation, but you'll need an additional installation kit.
