The tone, style and presentation look entirely different from the previous titles, which is a shame. A more genuine feeling of being stranded and having to survive was quite engaging; this looks more akin to Animal Crossing than it does a survival game.
"Nobody wants to awkwardly hit trigger buttons on the backside of a portrait handheld..."
Subtle. Unfortunately for them the Analogue Pocket allows you to use the X/Y buttons as L/R, but even if it didn't, it'd still be the far superior product.
Either they're making a bad excuse for compatability they were unable to add, or they legitimately think omitting choice/options from their customers is a good strategy; either way it's a bad look.
@Poodlestargenerica - Probably because whilst a great game, it is far from perfect. All of these changes described are for the best, but if for some reason you disagree out of principle, you can just play the original.
@dmcc0 - If they had announced this months ago while people had been still waiting for their pre-orders for over a year in some cases then people would be attacking them for announcing a new design before they'd fulfilled their massive existing backlog. People were going to complain either way.
@Razieluigi - It's a tough choice, because if I were recommending someone their products who specifically had interest in the support and OS side, I'd say steer clear, but the Pocket itself is such an amazing handheld outside of that extra support that I can't say it'd factor in well enough to affect my recommendation most of the time.
I'm disappointed that they've dropped planned features for the OS and that what little effort they have left for it is being geared towards core compatibility, but I still love the console.
The prevalence of colour-implementing and improvement patches as well as official DX versions do mean that a majority of original (DMG) Game Boy games are imo not worth playing today in their original form.
On the GBC/GBA front though there are still numerous titles worth playing today, and you need only look at the homebrew scene for the Game Boy and its explosion in recent years to see that many people tend to agree.
This is a great info repository you've set up for cores, and a lot more organised than others out there.
I'm still really waiting on the Tracking and other OS features Analogue is working on, but it's been impressive seeing how many cores are already out for the thing.
For anyone else in the UK; the system and case were advertised as costing $199, but ended up being $270 with shipping and taxes. Maybe if I can buy one used for a more reasonable price I'll give it a shot.

Re: Forget Game Boy Mods, Funnyplaying Is Making An Entirely New Game Boy Console
I can't see how this could possibly compete with the Analogue Pocket.
