Re: BAFTA Poll Declares Lara Croft The Most Iconic Video Game Character

JayJ

@Dramlin There is a good reason why I never really care about these gaming poll ranking results on gaming sites and services. They always seem to be massively skewed by whoever their main audience happens to be, which is often dominated by a collective niche that doesn't really represent the majority of consumers.

Re: Jack Thompson, The Man Who Tried To Ban GTA, Thinks Video Games Can Be Good, Actually

JayJ

@Zeebor15 True, corruption has become rampant with the changes in the industry and fears have shifted to different concerns. I always thought of Jack Thompson's crusade as having been misguided, but noble in intent. He simply fell upon the classic case of confusing correlation with causation. People trying to deal with violence in their lives or violent thoughts would be naturally drawn to violent media and video games being interactive has always provided a consequence free environment to exercise and vent their troubles. If anything video games provided a relief to people, which is something we have a far better understanding of today. I think the biggest issue with people like Thompson and their beliefs has always been their position as outsiders. Their lack of experience and knowledge when it came to video games generated beliefs guided by desperation and founded on fear. It is easy for people to fear what they do not understand, and the more desperate people get the more likely they are to make emotional and illogical conclusions. I feel like their desperation was a development of their desire to find a way to control a world they couldn't understand. I think that's why I have been so disappointed by industry insiders falling into this kind of behavior, I felt like they really should have known better.

Re: Jack Thompson, The Man Who Tried To Ban GTA, Thinks Video Games Can Be Good, Actually

@Sketcz One of the biggest changes I have taken note of is how the gaming community reacted towards people like Jack Thompson vs how they react towards people trying to fight the censors today. Back in the days of Thompson, it seemed like the entire gaming community was united against him. Nobody liked what he was saying or trying to do and they all fought against him and his attempts to influence video games. Now a days it seems like half the gaming community is in cahoots with the censors and fighting for them, and that is especially bad when you look at the present state of the journalism and big gaming media where the people fighting for the censors seem to greatly outnumber and demonize those trying to fight against them. This has allowed the latest form of puritanism to influence video games and flourish in the industry, with those trying to fight it being largely stifled and silenced. It's no wonder there is so much discontent among gamers these days.

Re: Jack Thompson, The Man Who Tried To Ban GTA, Thinks Video Games Can Be Good, Actually

JayJ

@Sketcz Yeah there is definitely a lot of truth to that. In the old days it was largely a bunch of conservative outsiders outraged at what they were being told about video games. Now a days all the censorship seems to be coming from people on the opposite side who have made their way into the industry. Back in the days of Jack Thompson, it was a lot easier to keep the puritans and censorship away. Now, it's like fighting against people who should be on your side.

Re: Somebody Wants $45,000 For Panasonic's Unreleased Nintendo 3DS Rival

JayJ

So they never got a buyer. I am shocked. Shocked!

Seriously though, there just isn't much going for this. It lacks any real importance, or any software to use it with, and it apparently doesn't even work either. It's just some unusual old prototype that I doubt anyone would find interesting enough to justify it's asking price.

Re: "Why Am I Still Doing This?" Says Modder As He Shows Off 16th Handheld N64

JayJ

I gotta say, these devices just don't make nearly as much sense these days as they did in the past. Like once upon a time I would have thought a handheld that could play my N64 cartridges would be incredible, but now we got a bunch of retro handhelds that can play the entire library, as well as stuff like the Switch N64 app.

Re: Best Gran Turismo Games, Ranked By You

JayJ

Terrible list if I am honest. GT for PSP is still one of the all-time greatest handheld racing games, if not the all time best. GT6 was easily a better game than GT5, especially if you want to talk about how GT5 was before it's 2.0 update that basically fixed most of the game. GT4 and GT2 are all-time classics though, and GT7 has become the definitive next gen racing experience.

I'd rank them:

1. GT4 - the definitive PS2 GT game
2. GT2 - the definitive PS1 GT game
3. GT6 - the definitive PS3 GT game

In that order because it feels like the GT4 was sort of peak GT, with the most content. GT2 just stands out as an incredible achievement for the PS1 that pushed what we thought possible. GT6 because it's basically the overall culmination of all the games, before the next gen change for GT Sport and GT7, and the best way to play GT on a PS3. Then I'd say:

4. GT7
5. GT PSP
6. GT PS1
7. GT3
8. GT5
9. GT Sport
10. GT Concepts

Re: Best Tekken Games Of All Time, Ranked By You

JayJ

This is how I'd rank the mainline series of games myself as a big longtime fan:

1. Tekken Tag Tournament 2
2. Tekken 5
3. Tekken 8
4. Tekken 3
5. Tekken 4
6. Tekken Tag Tournament
7. Tekken 6
8. Tekken 2
9. Tekken
10. Tekken 7

Tekken 8 could move up over time, but it feels too early to rate it above my two favorites.

Re: Going Back In Time - Do You Play Retro Games To Reconnect With Your Past?

JayJ

I'd say it's somewhere in the middle. I think it's more so just me reconnecting with an era than personal nostalgia, but nostalgia probably has a lot to do with the type of games I like to play, then again it's got a lot to do with my personal taste in games over the years as well.

I think the most appealing thing for me when it comes to retro gaming is probably just the feeling of what games were like in different eras, and reconnecting with a more simple time when gaming was more honest and games were produced by smaller and more passionate teams of people. There is just so much that I used to enjoy from different eras that we hardly see anymore, that can be unique to their eras. Playing older games can remind me of why I fell in love with gaming in the first place, and it can amaze me how much fun I can have with so many classics.

Re: Does Your SNES Have A Ticking Time Bomb Inside?

JayJ

Wonder what could cause the CPU to fail like that, and why some consoles need to be switch on from time to time to prevent them from going bad. You would think using electronics would shorten their life span, not increase it.

Re: Review: Steam Deck OLED - The Best Just Got Better

JayJ

Love the Steam Deck, I've had one since it launched essentially, but the OLED feels like the type of thing that's best for someone who never bought the original due to the price. It's one thing to buy a new $350 Switch, but a $650 Steam Deck is hard to justify when it only has an improved screen and some minor improvements like extra internal storage. That and I can't help but to feel like this is only an update before they give it a real performance upgrade, which is what I would want if I would be spending the money to get another.

Re: Review: AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01 - The Cutest PC Ever? Quite Possibly

JayJ

There's a lot of these mini-PC's right now, I got one for under $150 recently that does a pretty good job of basic media machine duty for a TV. That's about what these are best for besides maybe just a basic internet browsing desktop setup. They can do some good basic emulator stuff as well, just don't expect anything past PS2/Gamecube to run well.

Re: Interview: "It Was A Suicide Mission" - Larry Siegel Reflects On Atari's Failed War On Nintendo

JayJ

@KingMike Yeah Playstation software just came on strong and came to define an entire generation while Atari and Sega were in internal turmoil. Nintendo did a good job of hanging in there though. 3DO seems like it shot for an attempt at early success without their own hardware company backing it, kind of a unique attempt at creating a platform, at least for it's time.

Looking at what the hardware was capable of, there is just no denying that Jaguar and 3DO couldn't compete with the PS1 and N64 when it came to 3D games. Then we can look at the Dreamcast for where it eventually went, 90's tech that is. Huge improvements during that era, back when technology was advancing in big ways really fast. It's just shame that by the time the dust settled on the mid-90's Sega drama, it was too late to really save the brand as a platform despite their last ditch effort with the Dreamcast being rather good. As soon as the PS2 dropped they fall aside quick.

Re: Interview: "It Was A Suicide Mission" - Larry Siegel Reflects On Atari's Failed War On Nintendo

JayJ

The Lynx was definitely impressive hardware for it's time, and I feel like the Jaguar fell for the same reason the 3DO failed, those early 32(64)-bit consoles just couldn't compete with the later ones. Trying to produce truly 3D capable hardware and games was a huge challenge back in the early-mid 90's, and the early attempts at it just couldn't compete with the PS1 and N64. Heck even the Saturn just couldn't stack up, with the 32X being a real problem for Sega of America who seemed to be big on the idea of upgrading the genesis to 3D capability.

It was definitely a crazy time for the gaming industry, and a really interesting time, so many ideas being throw out there, trying to capture the next big thing. Atari just couldn't compete, heck the NES is basically the console that was the beginning of the end for them.
