For whatever it's worth the dev letter accompanying the announcement of the shutdown cited development difficulty as one of the reasons for the decision, working with a nearly 14 year old framework and engine only gets you closer to the cieling of what it's capable of.

My hope personally is that Border Break will follow what happened to Gundam Battle Operation, where a sequel came to launch (internationally even!) about a year after the first game's shutdown.

In the mean time, if you have a PS4, don't mind some external translations and want to see this game's twilight with the rest of us, feel free to join the Border Break PS4 server and play with the rest of us while we can.
