original ds has a hard rubber nub on the end of the wrist strap to use under the thumb as a stylus. you either used that or the stylus built in, iirc, it wasn't a capacitive (finger) touch screen, it was resistive. your fingernail could also trigger it, but you might damage the display.
i think he's confusing two seperate things, they did end up adding in an nvidia gpu (rsx) to the ps3 despite planning to use the cell for rendering too at some point. it's possible they originally contracted nvidia, but then decided to use the cell for rendering, then realized it wasn't feasible as developers were struggling with the cell's new programming methodology. the rsx is based on the 7800gtx, so having to go down a gen from an nvidia 8000 series lines up perfectly there. it's also possible nvidia was making spu2's for the ps2 on contract or something, but I've never heard of that before. and the spu2 seems a bit out of nvidia's wheelhouse, especially if they didn't have time to build up tooling for a production run.
