@MontyMole Fair enough, but when I said Persians widely understood Arabic, I was referring to the post Islamic period, especially from the 7th century onward, when Arabic became the dominant language of administration, scholarship, and trade in much of the Islamic world, including Persia. Of course, not every single Persian spoke Arabic, but many did, especially educated ones.
And yeah, Aladdin is a folk tale that's been reshaped countless times, so ultimately, he speaks whatever language the storyteller needs him to. But if we go by the Arabian Nights version, him speaking Arabic makes total sense.
@MontyMole Aladdin being "originally Chinese" is misleading. The story was added to Arabian Nights by a French translator who heard it from a Syrian storyteller. It's set in a fictionalized China, but everything about it is Arabized, including the names, culture, and Islamic elements. Also, Persians at the time widely understood Arabic since it was the dominant literary and scholarly language in the region. So the idea that the Arabian Nights guy wouldn't have understood Arabic is just wrong.
