I'm pretty tempted, but wow that price! I'd be a lot more tempted if I didn't have a nicely restored and properly working Sega CD along with a decent little library of games for it, but at the moment I'm pretty content to stick with original hardware... oh wait, this thing works on the Mega SG doesn't it? Well bleep.
Excellent review! I'm one of those diehard Sega fans who has already invested in two Genesis systems (One Model 1 High-Def VA6 and one Model 2 VA4), a Sega CD Model 2, and 32X along with a whole slew of mint in box Genesis controllers and a Sony WEGA Trinitron CRT TV to play them on; so I'm probably the target audience for the Mega SG. It definitely looks like a lovely bit of kit, but I'm going to hold out to see if 32X compatibility comes later down the line. I really love Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing Deluxe lol
I love the idea and they really do have an all-star cast behind it, which certainly bodes well for the Amico successfully coming to market. My only criticism is that it would sure be nice if they changed the aesthetics of the system to make it look less like a piece of medical equipment and more like the Intellivision II. That said, I'm totally down for some Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Cloudy Mountain and Treasure of Tarmin with modernized graphics!
Absolutely fantastic retrospective! I was 8 years old in 1993 and Mortal Kombat was THE reason I asked my parents for a Sega Genesis instead of a Super Nintendo for Christmas that year. They gave into my pleas and got me the Genesis with Mortal Kombat, along with the still amazingly good Sonic 2 as the system's pack-in game, and I've always been grateful to them for that. As an adult I can now appreciate the SNES as well, but as a kid there was nothing cooler to me than Mortal Kombat and Sonic. =)
I actually still have a 32X (and Sega CD) hooked up to my Genesis and enjoy it quite a bit. The game library is a little on the small side but games like Virtua Racing Deluxe and Virtua Fighter still hold up really well, and the 32X definitely had the best home console port of Mortal Kombat II and a few other multiplatform titles. The 32X was a total failure commercially speaking but it still has a lot to enjoy for retro gamers interested in going back and exploring it.
Well... fudge muffins. I was really looking forward to seeing what retro-esque offerings this system brought to the market and I was planning on picking one up the day they received a retail release, but I'm pretty sure that all this deception on the part of the hardware developers has completely killed any chance the Chameleon had of ever coming to market. Rat frazzles!

A wild Lolwut has appeared! I don't think I'll be buying one, but I totally dig the bizarro concept.
