I think this game has been WAY overly bashed and hated on and the main people responsible were/still are bitter Nintendo fans knowing this was Rare’s last game ever on a Nintendo console. By the time the game finally released we all knew about the sale of Rare to Microsoft. So fans felt betrayed and wanted to hate Rare for “selling out”. And talk about a match made in Hell? Rare could not have gone to a parent company who could’ve squandered their talents and tarnished their IP worse than Micro$haft! It was also arguably Nintendo’s biggest mistake ever as well. They went from having essentially double the amount of AAA exclusives on N64 down to half as many without Rare’s games on GameCube.
Anyway back to the game itself. I own it, but have never beaten it. But one thing I will say is it’s absolutely gorgeous looking, even by today’s standards! It also has some cool mechanics and concepts. You can kinda tell it’s a mishmash of 2 different ideas/stories and that does detract from it a bit but it’s still easily an 8/10 game and STILL better than ANYTHING Rare have ever made under Microsoft for Xbox.
This is the GameCube launch game that made everyone sit up and take notice. The little purple lunchbox was actually a pretty powerful piece of kit back in 2001. In fact, I'd say Rogue Leader looked better than ANY Xbox launch title, which was impressive since that system was the one with all the hype as far as specs go.
I'd also agree that it absolutely still holds up to this day. Factor 5 was an incredibly talented studio for sure.
