Colopl (Publisher of White Cat Project) copied Nintendo's patent and used them to go after smaller game devs, while Nintendo had been letting other devs use those patents at no fee for years.
Nintendo sued them because they were patent trolling and attacking smaller indie devs.
This is quite literally an exemple of Nintendo protecting smaller developers.
