Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Video Gaming Experience?

Willax

Hmm. I suppose it depends- do we count games like Humongous entertainment PC games like Freddi Fish 3 and/or Pajama sam 3 as "Video games"? What about edutainment games on PC? Do they count? Suppose you could slide in Journeyman Project 3 as one of my first videogame experiences too, seems close enough to a real video game to me.
There is another game that was made years before I was born but could count- Super Mario Bros 3 and/or this one Sesame street NES game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJvWSRAtgHA (Which i remember creeping me out for some reason, maybe it was the games mostly having a dark background or the NES coming on so rarely that all these visuals dancing across the screen came off as magic to me), whenever my household got the NES loaned to us working. That's often the first game i jump to when i think of "First video game experiences", even if i wasn't around for when it originally came out. Perhaps i played them before the aformentioned Humongous entertainment games entered our household via a General mills cereal CD promotion? (Oh, maybe it was that DW the picky eater interactive story book, or that Toy story interactive storybook, or heck, you could even put in the GBA version of super mario bros 3 because that was the first non edutainment game i recall actually putting in effort in to beat.)
So yeah, you can take your pick on where gaming started for me, I suppose.

Re: Talking Point: Are Video Games Linked To Physical Places In Your Memory?

Willax

Hmm. Give me a moment to think here...
Now, my "Game linked to physical location memory" is going to sound really sad to a few people, I'm sure, but.... Mine is Super Mario Galaxy and an EB Games near where i lived. I simply recall a family member and I finding the store one day. I saw the sign for the store and the poster announcing the game's release. And this was not only at the time where they still carried PS2, Gamecube and GBA Games, but i also recall it being a time where gaming was simply getting bigger and more mainstream then ever. New advancements in tech seemed to be coming in all the time and video games were becoming recognized as something everyone did. The future was big, bright and anything was possible.
Now, i didn't get the game that day (I was a poor kid growing up), but I eventually did get a wii and the game a couple years later. I just have fond memories of a place that was simply only for video games and nothing more. Runner up for the EBgames Memory is Lego Batman the Videogame and/or Lego Rock band at a EB Games located in a mall in the same city. Mostly for the same "Technology and video games are getting so cool!" Reason.
You know, now that i think about it, Maybe this might not be the right option to pick. I dunno, which fond memory is sadder to you- Super Mario Galaxy/Lego Rock band/Lego batman the videogame at an EB Games, or Super Mario Sunshine and/or Spyro A hero's tail and/or Shrek 2 at a McDonalds playplace's Gamecube demo kiosk? Because trips to McDonalds and Happy meals along with when they had videogames at those places still (When they functioned anyway) remain some of the happiest memories of my youth. I say these memories may be sad to some as these are massive conglomerate companies we are talking about here, whose job it is to get you hooked and drain you of all your money via happiness. Ah, the follies of youth. I mean, those memories are still happy and formative, but you know.
