One of the things to understand as well is that even in Europe there were big differences. For example the ZX Spectrum was massive in the UK, Spain, Portugal and Russia, but practically non-existent in France and Germany where (respectively) the Amstrad CPC and C64 dominated (though the C64 was also very big in Britain).
I was also interested to read earlier in the comments that console gaming seemed to be more popular, earlier, in Scandinavia than other parts of Europe. I never knew that.
@President_Leever Did you watch the whole thing)? He starts off telling the history from the common US/console centric perspective, then goes back and retells it from the European/home computer perspective. I thought it was really well done and emphasised the existence of the different histories.
Wonder why they never give Superfrog any love any more... used to be that you could get both the MS-DOS port and a 'modern' remake on Steam, but they both got taken down a few years back... strange.
Have the NES, SNES, Mega Drive and Amiga mini consoles, and love them all (I don't have a problem with the Amiga Mini controller in all honesty).
I think that's probably me done... unless they bring out a Master System Mini, which as a Brit I would LOVE, but doubt that the economics would work out, as it was such a flop in the US and Japan.
I really like Antstream, but I always wonder how they’re making money, and worry that it can’t be sustainable. At first they were charging £10 per month - massively overpriced, which presumably no-one was subscribing at, then they pivoted to their current freemium model which was supposedly ad-supported, but the only adverts I ever saw were ones from Antstream themselves!
Now their new plan looks more sensible / sustainable. But it’s another big change - I hope it works out for them this time.
"In 1992... the Master System would have been considered somewhat antiquated in comparison, even then."
How very dare you! I was bought my Master System II in 1992 (bundled with Alex Kidd built in and Sonic on cartridge). But yes, definitely the cheapo system for folks who couldn't afford a Mega Drive...
It's crazy - there's the same gap between the Xbox 360 and now as there was between the ZX Spectrum / C64 and the Dreamcast. Crazy when you think about it like that
