The problem of carts was only the straw that broke the camel's back. The real split started back when Secret of Mana was originally planned for the SNES CD as a launch title and had to be reworked to fit the SNES cartridge by limiting audio samples, and cutting an entire area out of the game. When Nintendo scrapped the SNES PlayStation for the Phillips venture, only to then have it turn out to be a debacle of massive proportions, Square was already looking for an out and a reason. The N64 just gave them the final reason to leave.
