Re: Why Famitsu's 'Perfect' Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Review Highlights "The Sorry State Of Preservation"

@city952 LOL, yeah, it's a closed site with only a few hundred members whose priorities are scans, not the software running the site. If it's an attractive site that runs on expensive software you're after, Retromags is your starting point. They've got around 5,200 mags, but most of them are American. Both OutofPrintArchive and OldGameMags were created around the same time by disgruntled ex-Retromags members. OoPA has created a couple hundred scans in that time (so not quite 13,000), but their site is more attractive, for sure.

Preservation is up to us as individuals. It would be lovely if the publishers made them available for a fee (expecting a business to do anything for free is madness), but that's a pipe dream. So anyone complaining about why a magazine scan isn't available has no one but themselves to blame.

I've scanned around 350 magazines, maybe 80 of which are Famitsu. It's cost me over $1000 of my own money, and thousands of hours of time. But time and money are the sacrifices that must be made if you expect these things to ever be scanned.

Don't own any magazines? Neither did I - I had to buy them.

Don't have a scanner? Neither did I - I had to buy one (two actually, after the first one was damaged by an errant staple I didn't notice on a magazine page.)

Don't know how to use Photoshop or other editing software? Neither did I - I had to learn.

All of these things have really just one vital requirement - initiative. It WILL also require your money, and your time - and don't expect to be thanked for your efforts, because that will almost never happen. But the most important step is to stop asking when someone else is going to do it and make the decision to do it yourself.

Sorry if that sounded a little preachy. To show there's no hard feelings, here's a scan of the page you're all talking about (Just a quickie on my flatbed - I'll do a nice scan of the full mag eventually, but I've got a million other things higher up on my "to do" list.)
