The definitive version of Star Control 2 is the open-source "The Ur-quan Masters" (recently put on Steam for free as well) and has been for decades. It's based on the 3DO code (and includes the 3DO voice acting) but adds some elements from the DOS version, bugfixes, new features, mod support, and runs on modern OSes.
Children of infinity will include controller support for PC and console releases are a stretch goal.
