1) If Canada has only captured 1lb on fentanyl in the last year, as claimed by Trudeau, they're clearly failing spectacularly as much more is coming across that porous border. Law enforcement traces enormous amounts of fentanyl back to Canada in the USA. In the end, Canada's economy is much more dependent on the USA than the other way around, it's only a matter of time before they cave and try to help out more.
2) Tariffs are political, so again, evidence that this approach is working. TSMC didn't commit anything near 100B under CHIPS, the difference - they even admit - is due to potential tariffs. And we can add to the list Samsung, LG, all moving manufacturing back to the USA to avoid tariffs. Ford, Tesla, etc. It's undeniably happening as evidenced by company announcements. Again, Honda adding capacity in the USA proves my point - more jobs, more work in the USA. It's a $10T opportunity for the country according to Morgan Stanley.
3) The economy under Trump 45 was the best the USA had ever had, in history, period. It's one of the reasons he won this time. If anything close to that happens again, and he can keep fentanyl precursors out the USA, mission accomplished. The economic boom for the average American will more than make up for any tariff affect, particularly if Canada, Mexico, etc. cave (which they ultimately will, as evidenced by their actions in the past).
Single payer like Canada, where people wait for hours even days to be seen in the emergency room? No thanks. I had to provide my employees in Canada all HSA's in order for them and their families to be seen for emergency healthcare, because of long waits and poor care in the public clinics/hospitals.
@Daniel36 It's already illegal. The precursors are coming into Canada, Mexico (from China) for manufacturing in those countries, then for smuggling the end product (drug pills) down into the USA. If there were more controls to prevent the raw materials from flowing into these countries from China, it would help solve the problem.
@CocktailCabinet 1) Canada has done no such thing - don't kid yourself. It's only a smaller amount that's caught vs. Mexico, and the amount is increasing steadily from Canada per CBP data. 2) I guess you missed the news about Honda manufacturing returning to the States from Mexico, TSMC investing $100B in Arizona, etc. It is absolutely working to bring manufacturing jobs back. 3) People are already struggling with fentanyl, outsourced manufacturing. This will be a chance to reverse it.
1) Tariffs that will force China to stop sending fentanyl to the US and/or cartels...I'm on board. 2) Move more manufacturing to the USA for jobs...I'm on board. 3) I have to spend a few more dollars on items that may be impacted...ok, not great, but it's a tradeoff I can make for 1) and 2) above.
