Update [Thu 26th Oct, 2023 12:00 BST]: Sega has shown off the bonus games featured in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name in a new video:
Original Story [Thu 7th Sep, 2023 09:05 BST]: Sega's Daytona USA is one of the most successful arcade machines of all time, and it's not uncommon to spot units in wild even today, almost 30 years after it made its debut.
The game received ports to the Saturn and Dreamcast, and would eventually be made available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 as a digital download. However, its 1998 sequel, Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge, wasn't as lucky; it never got a home port, with a proposed Dreamcast conversion rumoured to have been cancelled in favour of Daytona USA 2001.
Thankfully, the long wait for a domestic edition of the game is now coming to a close thanks to the upcoming Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. The Yakuza / Like a Dragon series has a tradition of including Sega arcade machines (something that can be charted all the way back to Sega stablemate Shenmue, which has some commonalities with the Yakuza franchise), and this new entry will continue the trend.
Daytona USA 2 is confirmed to be included in the game, but it will go under its non-licenced title Sega Racing Classic 2, as Sega's deal with the Daytona Speedway has now lapsed. Fighting Vipers 2 is also confirmed to be in the game, as are the Master System ports of Flicky and Galaxy Force.
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name arrives on PS5, Xbox Series S/X and PC on 9th November, 2023.

It is a shame this isn't going to be a physical release (at least in the UK).
I am hopelessly behind in the Yakuza series, but I now want to buy this game just for the arcades! SEGA are constantly re-releasing the 16-bit era content in ranges like SEGA AGES, can we please have some standalone releases from this era? Pretty please?
I have never ever played Yakuza and I have no interest in it. Can they simply release the ports on their own?
Fighting Vipers was one of my favourite games on the Sega Saturn. I haven’t played number 2, so this might actually draw me in to Yakuza… but likely not.
Let’s hope they do a proper Sega Saturn collection for us one day.
Luckily I have Model 3 emulation which runs great. Disappointed to hear this is only included in a game I have no interest in playing. This is the trouble with licensing running out.
@belmont totally agree, why Sega can't do a model1, 2, 3 collection is beyond me. I expect its all about licensing.
Sold. Absolutely fantastic news.
LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I have been wanting this to be ported for the longest time and thought it simply wouldn't happen. I'm so glad that they got it to all work out! I didn't even think of them using the Sega Racing Classic name to being it back! Hopefully with the fact that they brought it back and that they were able to do model 3 emulation, that Scud Race could come back next
Like A Dragon was already very high up on my list but now it's pretty much at the top. Whilst I can already play Daytona USA 2 via emulation, it'll be great to finally have a true home port. Fingers crossed it releases standalone at some point down the line
@Kienda Same here. Loved Fighting Vipers on the Saturn but FV2 on the Dreamcast was a bit meh. Dont get me wrong it didnt look bad and played fine but there was something missing about it.
I love that Sega does this, especially these new home ports like this and Motor Raid. It would be nice if they were easier to access outside of the game, but I'll take what I can get!
As good as this is, Sega really needs to just release a collection of their classic Arcade games by now.
I've been saying for a while that Sega should just push the "Sega Racing Classic" moniker for the two games and make the games widely available, especially the second. I think there would be enough good reaction that most people would figure out they're the Daytona games. This is good news, and hopefully it means standalone release in the future. I've never played Yakuza, and I know it has plenty of fans, so maybe I'll end up trying it, but as of right now I see this as a small arcade collection with a giant, complicated hub area.
@JayJ
It does seem daft to have them scattered over various Yakuza games. I believe sales of the Switch Ages series were underwhelming, but surely a big comp if all the stuff from these games would be viable.
This is such a strange turn of events. For years, we've been wanting Sega to bring back their Model 3 games so we can buy them... and now they decide to make them freebies in their latest Yakuza game?
Great news either way, though! (I just need to catch up on the other what, 8, first?)
Speaking of lapsed licences, can Sega please pull their finger out and get OutRun 2 Coast to Coast back on modern consoles please? Love that game.
@mjparker77 I don't think they should treat the latest Ages series they released on the Switch as any indication of what the interest for their 3D 90's classic arcade games would be like, as that was just a collection of old Master System and Mega Drive era games.
I think the Ages games they had on the PS2 would be more like it, but sadly that was a Japan exclusive series that is about two decades old by now. I just can't help but to feel like Sega had completely forgotten about their 90's era arcade games if it wasn't for the Yakuza series. Considering the popularity of retro collections lately, especially 90's era, it just seems crazy for them to have no proper home console releases.
@Fighting_Game_Loser I'd pay quintuple for an M2 Sega Ages port of Scud Race.
@JayJ
Apart from OutRun and VR......
Wait, Galaxy Force is the Master System version? Damn......
Sega need to release both Daytona games on modern ecosystems. Rename it if you have to. We'll all still call it Daytona.
I honestly had no idea they even had Fighting Vipers 2 and the SG-1000 version of Flicky were coming in here as well! I must of missed the blurb in the original article. It's cool to see that we have good Model 3 emulation from Sega officially now, as well as seeing official SG-1000 games as well. RGG is so much better at preserving Sega's classic games than Sega is itself lol
