Re: Best Of 2024: 3 Cities, 17 Stores – Our Epic Retro Gaming Hunt Across Japan

DasWunderkind

I was in Akihabara tonight, and to be honest the video game stores here in Japan are kind of overshadowed by the manga, toy stores and fetish shops which have a lot more to look at and explore.

The retro game craze has reached its apex with the proliferation of retro handhelds being produced by Anbernic and Retroid. Not only have they improved on the official devices released by Nintendo and Sega, they are region free and play translated versions of games that used to be exclusive to Japan. It makes collecting old video games feel tedious and burned out, especially since those games will either end up on a shelf or back in circulation when the person who buys them needs money.

Re: Fan Translation And ROM Hack-Sharing Site CDRomance Forced Underground After Legal Threat

I donated money to them during Christmas and thanked the admin for archiving so much good stuff. My Retroid Pocket 3+ wouldn't be the same without it, I'm so happy the site is still up and hosting roms and ISOs.

He doesn't have any new or newish content and his Nintendo roms are limited to fanhacks from a bygone era so I don't see what all the hoopla is about. Vimm's Lair and edgeemu.net are also great sites I highly recommend.

Nintendo doesn't care if you hack their old games or consoles. Just look at all the amazing SNES and N64 romhacks out there, or the homebrew games coming out for NES and GBC. You can get an Everdrive all-in-one gaming library cartridge for practically every one of their classic systems. Companies like Retroid and Anbernic are even copying their handheld aesthetic and selling boatloads of portable consoles that play those old games via pixel perfect emulation. They only step in and stomp a fan project out if it is directly taking profits from the product they're currently selling. Sure they might have taken down fan projects like Pokemon Prism and AM2R in the past but now you can easily download those games with a simple Google search. I for one can't wait for the Riishop to be a real thing, even though I'll use it just for sh1tsngiggles. 😄

Re: Best Beat 'Em Ups Of All Time

DasWunderkind

This list is trash. No Growl, no games from the Beats of Rage engine which is made exclusively for Beat'em Ups, no Double Dragon II Revenge from the NES, no Streets of Rage 2 hacks like the World Warrior version, Dynamite Cop or Power Stone 2 on the Dreamcast... I would seriously be embarrassed publishing this 💩

Re: RetroArch Is Working On Hardware That Allows You To Run N64 Carts On Your PC

DasWunderkind

A real N64 with 2 controllers and the entire games library on an Everdrive will cost you $150-200.

At best, the Switch Online expansion pack will have 38 N64 games you can rent for $50 a year and go extinct in 2-3 years.

Nothing can emulate N64 games, not even Nintendo's official emulator. RetroArch is even worse at it, even though it does almost everything else really well. Read up on why it won't ever be possible instead of assuming it's already been done.

Rakuga Kids, Dragon Ball Z Kart, Bangai-O, Smash Remix, Ocarina of Time Redux, Mario64 Sonic Edition, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 FreeM Edition just to name a few you won't see on Switch Online 😉

Re: Hands On: Retro Handheld Face-Off - Anbernic R351 Vs Retroid Pocket 2

DasWunderkind

@ian_beale N64 software emulation hasn't developed much and/or people can't seem to figure out how to do it 100% right. It's less about the power of the hardware available and more about how individual N64 cartridges interacted with the console. No matter how advanced your new iPhone is, the N64 hasn't been 100% cracked so there ain't an emulator out there that will do it right

Re: Feature: The Story Of The Game Genie, The Cheat Device Nintendo Tried (And Failed) To Kill

DasWunderkind

I beat Ninja Gaiden 2 with this thing and the game was still stupid difficult. I only needed the infinite lives and weapons codes anyway since the savepoints were nonexistent and you could only use like 4 ninja stars per level.

Awesome end boss fight and the cut scenes for an 8bit game really added to the cinematic ending. One of the few difficult retro games worth finishing. Gives you a real sense of accomplishment.

Re: The RK2020 Is Another Chinese Handheld Which Aims To Play Absolutely Everything

DasWunderkind

Emulation is the way of the future. When you stream a game onto your console that isn't powerful enough to play it, you're essentially emulating it through your console's software. Even the big 3 know this and are transitioning away from console development since closed platforms are more limiting than having access to all your game library from one device.

My LG V20 is a phone you can get on ebay for $100 and it can run NES, GB/GBA, SNES, N64, DS, Atari 2600, PCE. MSX 1+2, Neo Geo Pocket, MAME, PSX, SMS, GG, MD, SEGA CD, Dreamcast and OpenBOR all at near 100% accuracy. I myself still prefer to game on my homebrewed Wii, but it's nice to have almost all my games on the go right now

Also, if you have a problem with roms and emulation, it's probably because you're too dumb to find a good rom site or have no clue how to use IPS patches. If you don't want to emulate that's fine, more Zelda and SMW hacks for us!
