Re: "An Evil Disguised As Good" - Dragon Quest Vets Rail Against Censorship In Candid Interview

@jamess "We should go out of our way to protect and support freedom of expression in all forms of art and entertainment."

The problem is, a very visible portion of the gamertariat doesn't truly care about that. It's the lack of T&A that gets #TheGamers™ riled up, and they've gotten really good at making smokescreens to declare it's about anything but that. You and I both know it.

Re: Poll: Are Game Boy Games Still Worth Playing In 2023?

LadyCharlie

Most 8-bit Game Boy games have aged remarkably well!
Platformers like Donkey Kong, Castlevania Belmonts Revenge, and Mega Man V still feel fresh. Adventure games like Links Awakening, Final Fantasy Adventure, and For the Frog the Bell Tolls are still engaging. Puzzle games like Tetris, Cattrap, and Pipe Dream are nearly timeless.

Like any system, there is some filler and some games that have aged poorly. But Game Boy still has a lovely ratio of quality to quantity.

Re: Review: The King Of Fighters: The Ultimate History

Simultaneously one of the most recognized and most underapprected fighting franchises.
Personally, I'd put the entire series above Street Fighter in terms of overall quality and variety. I'm glad KoF has been gaining more traction outside of Japan and Latin America these past few years.

Re: Feature: Hidehiro Funauchi Mastered The Game Boy's Sound Chip, Then Seemingly Disappeared

LadyCharlie

The sound chip of the Game Boy is very unique, instantly recognizable, and also underappreciated in recent years.
It's misunderstood as being less powerful than the U.S./European NES, despite having one additional sound channel available for music.
The Game Boy sound font stands out as so memorable that it was used by mainstream artists like Beck, Kesha, and Robyn years before the popularization of chiptune musicians. With a lifespan that ran from 1989 - 2002, it's no wonder that the sound font has been treasured by so many for so long, and it's nice to see the name of Mr. Funauchi - a prominent part in making it possible - recognized and honored here today.

Re: Feature: More Than Four Years Of Painful Waiting Later, We've Finally Got Paprium - But Is It Any Good?

LadyCharlie

"Finishing the game locks that particular save file, along with all of the stuff you've unlocked – a truly maddening decision that means you have to start entirely from scratch." "Fonzie is notoriously dismissive of anything that isn't 100% original Sega hardware, you see."

This project smacks of an alarming attitude. One that says 'you're going to play this game the way I want you to, or you're not going to play it at all.'

And with feedback like this: "It's a good time, but does Paprium match more recent offerings, such as Streets of Rage 4? In all honesty, it doesn't." Rather makes not playing it feel like a good decision.
