I’m still not won over by any modern retro hardware box. FPGA looks the way to go but nothing that’s been released looks better than just keeping original classic hardware running. Of course I still use the old picture tube.
@BionicDodo got a PCE duo R off eBay from Japan last year. Favoritest console I own now
Of course there’s disappointment, it’s modern Sega, they so rarely get it right anymore and usually it’s because they’ve left something to the fans. So depressing.
Anyway, with 8Bitdo’s Genesis PCB mod that controller hasn’t left my pocket since I got it. Best thing to happen to the world of modern wireless controllers. Just bring on the Sega Ages M2!
These emulator consoles have never appealed to me. There’s nothing like the accuracy of original hardware. But if they get others into retro gaming I’m just fine with that.
Bought my PCE DuoR last year and picked up the arcade card this year. If you adore the 16 bit era, especially if you’re a Sega Genesis fan, this is a system u need in your life.
Interesting that you only see articles about these artists after they’ve died. I didn’t know Greg Martin’s name until news of his passing swelled up enough articles in much the same manner. Who else is left? Let’s hope we hear from them before they pass.
I consider myself an avid retro gamer, and while I have all the hardware I need I’m NO collector. Unfortunately in every corner of the western world from local Craigslist sellers to game shops, people are selling to a collector market everywhere, which means high prices.
Fortunately I’m mostly playing Sega games and for now can dodge the absolute spanking of the top dollar prices for a 16 bit cartridge that Nintendo players have to pay. But it’s still bad
For now, I can have my glorious CRTs. I even run my Switch through my 16:9 model with an HDMI converter (Sonic Mania looks proper stunning on it).
One big thing about the picture tubes for me is the depth. Flat panels really don't add any depth to the image. A CRT has a magical way of giving real depth to the background layers in video games. And that phosphor glow...just feels right, doesn't it?
Bit of a shame this non-product made it as far as it did. It does however demonstrate how difficult making even a simple video game console is. Perhaps I can better appreciate even industry leaders like Nintendo, in their development and marketing of dedicated video game consoles. Truly a lot of excellent pieces need to come together to make a successful gaming console. We are certainly aware of the many companies large and small that have not achieved that success.
Ah yes, the Sony deal that went south. Good times. I applaud the author for tackling the article. It was inevitable that many tech companies would try to include "playful" offereings to add their machine's or service's media playback options. In fact it still goes on to this day. So there's just no predicting who would have stepped up and succeeded where another failed. Sony and Sega had early success but I doubt that race would have gone on for too much longer even if Sony had failed. Too many tech innovations rapidly developing across the spectrum and a lot of money in each corner for prototyping and manufacturing really anything.
Companies don't have 'feelings' and neither should their business. If the way is open now they should go for it regardless of past sweat and tears. The game would positively resonate with Nintendo game players and thats the part of Nintendo that would matter to them anyway.

@BionicDodo I hear it. Classic gaming can run up quite the bill. When you do finally get it, it’ll be a great day, even among all those consoles!
