Re: Yuji Naka Killed "Dreamcast's Star Fox", Says Former Sega Producer

@themightyant What could even be not AS bad though? Yuji’s secret intent that wasn’t to scrap this project for parts? That Sega of Japan didn’t have an anti-Western racist sentiment since at least Project Katana (Saturn) and these were all shrewd business decisions (that clearly didn’t pan out)?

Watched a documentary on Project Hammer and it kind of confirms the Japanese arrogance when dealing with Western devs is maybe not that uncommon, but also, these if these Western devs “can’t find the fun” fast enough in development, maybe it’s not as good as they think it was in hindsight.

That’s the only “other side” I can imagine is true: Yuji Naka was correct that the game was irredeemable trash. After seeing his career, I wouldn’t have listened to a word he had to say about game design.

@AtlanteanMan Great summation, and you’re preaching to the choir here. Buying a Playstation after I finished Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers felt like sleeping with my best friends’ widow.

What I really mourn was all the creativity that got left on the system. Playstation has it’s wonderfully weird period too, but it feels like a whole gene pool was just eliminated, or evolutionary branch was pruned. There’s almost zero nostalgia for odd gems like Shining and the Holy Ark or Dark Savior, and the indies who are doing such a great job of rescuing the past are only excavating the “winner’s history”.

@AtlanteanMan This. SEGA left so much quality and novelty to die on Saturn. It’s such a shame, especially when you look at Shining Force III (1-3) and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Their lack of influence and impact left the genre to become very complacent in the wake of Final Fantasy VII’s success until arguably very recently.

@RadioHedgeFund For sure it is! That’s kinda my point. The betrayal isn’t that they’re making a bad game, but that they’re taking the name for something else in favor of what earned the goodwill in the first place and possibly abandoning it. PSO is good, but it’s not so good it can justify replacing the Phantasy Star RPG series.

@RadioHedgeFund I agree with you, despite never having played a phone game I wouldn’t have preferred on a dedicated machine... maybe Threes, and Downwell because it ran at 50% speed on my phone and I could actually beat it consistently haha.

I’m still butt hurt about never receiving a proper Phantasy Star V, and the series going into online multiplayer... I really don’t think it’s just about knocking mobile games. It’s more about the fan’s support and emotional investment in a series, and that feeling of abandonment when a IP thinks it can go for greener pastures. They won’t love you like I do!!!
