Re: 3DS Virtual Boy Emulation Gives You 3D Without The Headaches

davidtobin100

Just to temper expectations - the emulator is really excellent but not without its issues. I've had crashes, freezes, etc while using it. All to be expected with an early version and I'm sure these little niggles will be ironed out soon.

That said, when it works it really works amazingly well and is a serious positive for preservation. Having Virtual Boy games playable in 3D on a Nintendo console is really important. Great work by the team behind it!

@schweinebrot Used the Trinitron filter on a few cores and it’s not a great experience on the pocket itself. Tbf it seems to be way better on the Dock. That said there’s a few cores that are having issues with the Trinitron filter acc to the subreddit. The Trinitron core also does not work on all cores unfortunately. Seen some great results from it on some of the Duo reviews so excited to try it on others.

Probably important to say that screen filters are NOT included in this for FGPA. Its only the option has been made available for the developers of cores to add it. We’re still waiting for that to happen which could take a few more days/weeks.

Re: Analogue Pocket OS 2.0 Adds A Much-Requested Feature

davidtobin100

I have a Pocket for well over a year and it’s honestly my least used handheld. The fact we’re still waiting on these basic features years later is pretty shocking. They make really nice gear but the customer support and the follow through on features is simply shockingly awful.

I’d honestly recommend anyone interested in emulation to simply save their money and buy a Miyoo Mini Plus.

Re: Poll: Handheld Or TV - How Do You Play Retro Games?

davidtobin100

Retro games just work so well on handheld. Whether it’s official means like NSO on Switch, fan made solutions like EmuDeck for the SteamDeck or devices like the Miyoo Mini or Analogue Pocket it’s just such as easy way to consume them.

I’d give a super strong recommendation for the Miyoo Mini for everything up to PS1 as long as you install OnionOS. I actually prefer it to the Analogue Pocket for playing ROMs. Nothing beats the Pocket with original carts though.

Steam Deck is really on another level with EmuDeck. Playing PS2, GameCube and even Wii U games in higher resolutions and more stable farmerates on the go with the ability to dock is brilliant. I may have all the HDMI mods and dongles needed to get a good picture but the simplicity of the Deck running EmuDeck for retro systems is pretty unparalleled.

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Video Gaming Experience?

davidtobin100

First gaming experience was a Pong clone machine that my parents had bought in the late ‘70s. Can’t remember the name of it but the controls looked like a Pritt Stick with the top being two stable to control the action. It had a few pong variation games such as tennis and a doubles thing where you had two paddles on each side of the screen. It also had a barely functioning light gun that you’d use to shoot a pixel that bumped about the screen like the DVD screensaver.

First personal console was the GameBoy that I got for Christmas when I was 10 the year it launched. It’s still working and in perfect condition to this day!

Re: The Brilliantly Subversive CeX Ads That Set Charlie Brooker On Course For 'Black Mirror'

Fun article! I remember the cartoons from back in the days of PC Zone. Brooker was always a very marmite writer in there - he’d bounce from having you doubled in laughter on one review to absolutely hating his take on another. He was the first reviewer who I actually remember noting his name and looking for his specific contributions each issue. Never dull in anything he wrote but I still can’t forgive him for his review of Infogrames classic Outcast back in PC Zone! 😜 So cool to see his career progress to such success.
