"I think Ocarina was the first game where the protagonist sheaths their weapon to then interact with the world"
interesting! come to think of it, I noticed the distinction too, when I first played TOoT. especially the "put away" command. you're right, that really seemed new at the time. ππ
EDIT - metal gear solid definitely had holstering/readying of weapons, just months before Ocarina IIRC, but it's not third person or a sword, as you mentioned. I like this topic!
EDIT 2 - many games I can think of either had the character running around with sword in hand, as you pointed out, or carrying nothing, and the sword/weapon magically appearing during the attack animation, only to disappear again! i dont know which is stranger haha.
i feel as though resident evil had weapon ready/ unarmed states, but that's guns again. I'm determined to come up with an exception but so far i can't! ππ
I'm not disagreeing with your whole comment (which i enjoyed btw!) but:
"Kratos carries his weapon on his back because Link did."
I must point out that they both carry their weapons on their backs because people IRL have been doing this for time immemorial. Link mightve been the first (I'm not quite convinced) but it's hard to give a game credit as innovator when the designers were simply modelling what already existed in the world.
Your comment got me thinking, and it's just my opinion of course! βοΈ
at the rate of ~4 games per month, I think 20 bucks/mo is about the best we could hope for, but compared to 8 bucks a pop thats a great deal! and youd be expanding your collection and videogame knowledge/experience constantly.

I thought calling it TEKKEN like it's just self explanatory was pretty bold and I still do π it was the epitome of cool to me when I was 10 and got my first PSX. I couldnt believe I was playing a game like that in my bedroom! π€―π€―
Nothing is more boring and lazy than aiming a virtual gun at a virtual head. I dont really even think this that arrogant or pretentious of a take. More like it's just true, and harsh. βοΈ
thankfully i can still get (and have) CRT sets where I am, because the cost per system of these mods is still prohibitive for me. π βοΈ cool as they are.
I have less of a problem with the dumb name (and yeah, it is dumb! π) and more of a problem with the fact that it gives legitimacy to the idea that the genre was equally birthed by the two games, super metroid and SOTN, and we have been stuck with that story for the last... 26 years(?!) and here we are again:
"one half of the Metroidvania puzzle"
1) super metroid popularized (and to be fair, perfected) the form, it wasnt the first.
2) SOTN copied super metroid and somehow now gets equal credit in the eyes of gamers and game content writers for all eternity.
in my opinion, these are both Action RPGS.
Super Metroid is sci fi Zelda on its side.
SOTN is Super Metroid with vampires and more "rpg elements."
Feel free to disagree! I love it haha. βοΈ
(PS - it sounds like I'm minimizing or trashing these games, but they are easily two of my favorite games of all time! I played both when they came out, when I was a child, and on a good day they are both still top 10 or even top 5. so, I'm not bashing them!)
I'm aware! Theres always a minority opinion and taste is not a democracy πβοΈ cheers.
(ps glad you and others liked it, truly! but it has neither the nostalgia of the old games nor a compelling new take on the series so i played it a bit and quit. it was a competent sonic game, and I'd rank it somewhere in the middle of the field personally.)
the notions that super metroid is fully one half the "metroidvania" story, and that it shares that status with SOTN equally, are an assault to my sensibilities and factual reality.
don't game journalists ever get tired of this narrative? it's a word, and it never was a very good one.
off the dome, I can think of exactly two consoles that have one analog stick out of the box, and for neither is this device well suited otherwise π«€
The analog sticks on these types of devices so often feel like "checklist engineering" rather than thoughtful design with purpose. too bad, as the latter would really stand out in the field. βοΈ
"at least the d-pad is parallel to the action buttons."
here, here!
"For some games, as shoot em ups, a analogue one is quite nice."
you know, with a well spec'd, tight feeling stick I might even accept just a stick on something like this. i think having both is a luxury that a device this small doesnt need, and cant afford. βοΈ
PS - the Capitalism Bros always attack the strawman of communism, while pretending as though Democratic Socialism isnt by far the more popular, realistic, and pragmatic alternative.
It is in fact the drive for more and more Capital that has brought us to this particular first world problem. There is nothing "communist" about it, that makes zero sense.
"Panasonic went from making the best cordless drills in the industry to just giving up on their power tool division (coincidentally, a decade ago),"

that said, color me skeptical that Panasonic power tools would be better than Festool, Metabo, Bosch, Hilti, or even Milwaukee (what I use, best value for money IMO.)
I'm a big fan of Panasonic electronics going way back, incidentally.
Anyway I know it was an offhand comment and not an earthshattering revelation, but your comment stood out to me βοΈ cheers.

Re: Arcade Archives Holding Special Event To Celebrate 10th Anniversary
if hamster did a subscription service where you just "get" every game each week for a discounted monthly fee id subscribe.
if hamster did compilations of their games Id buy them.
If hamster did more sales I'd buy more of their games.

@Diogmites pro am is a formative game for me, as the first game i ever played with "tank controls" (oh, how i loathe that term π)
i feel like the day rc pro am "clicked" for me was the day i started getting "good" at games π great game!
ps - if you haven't played rc pro am 2 i highly recommend it! βοΈ
pps - also i played many rounds of super sprint for the first time with a good friend who grew up with it and I can strongly recommend that game too!
