Re: This $75 Handheld Could Be The Best Way To Emulate Nintendo DS In 2025

Banjo-

@GravyThief Not to mention that 3DS, the best Nintendo handheld in my opinion, is backward compatible with DS and those cards.

I can't believe I can play Virtual Boy games at full speed on New 3DS in stereoscopic 3D. That system didn't even exist in this part of the world and now I kind of have it in my pocket.

Re: Nintendo Is Now Going After YouTube Accounts Which Show Its Games Being Emulated

Banjo-

What happened to Nintendo? They have become the greediest and cruelest entertainment company in the world and they couldn't care less about their fans. At this rate, I feel like not buying from them anymore and just using emulation. Maybe my next Switch is not Switch 2 but the Asus, Steam, Lenovo or whatever. I don't want to support their ninjas and lawyers that must take their greatest budget every year, unless they are using slaves. Funny that it wouldn't surprise me.

Re: 3DS Virtual Boy Emulation Gives You 3D Without The Headaches

Banjo-

This is actually very interesting. The last Virtual Boy emulator I tried on the New Nintendo 3DS was unplayable. I will try this. Virtual Boy was not even released here! (New) Nintendo 3D is the perfect, the only console for Virtual Boy emulation.

EDIT: Tried. Awesome graphics and audio.

Re: Poll: What Is Rare's Best Game?

Banjo-

I haven't played a better "karts" (cartoon?) racer than Diddly Kong Racing and I think that I've played them all 🀣. Conker's Bad Fur Day is divisive basically because of its humour and gore, but if you play it on Xbox with the upgraded resolution and performance, you'll appreciate how beautiful it is, very likely the best-looking Nintendo 64 game. It will show you what that machine was able to do in the right hands compared to its competitors. Moreover, Sea of Thieves has the best water in any video game to date. That reminds me that I'm still waiting for a new Wave Race by Nintendo, but NST has only made Mario vs. DK games since then...

Re: Poll: What Is Rare's Best Game?

Banjo-

@Poodlestargenerica Yeah, I couldn't disagree more with his post either. Besides, some of the Xbox games that Rare made are excellent, e.g. Viva PiΓ±ata and Sea of Thieves. I also loved Grabbed by the Ghouiles. I know it's pure arcade and some people find it silly, but it's addictive and challenging. I like the art style and music, too. The title also deserves praise. Gregg Mayles heard someone on the street said that and he loved it.

Nintendo,.on the other hand, has lost much of its magic, in my opinion. Maybe because they are making games more accessible and mainstream, such as Mario Kart 8 compared to the older titles that were more focussed on the racing aspect and more realistic regarding physics, like Double Dash. Many people love Super Mario Odyssey but I found it dull and boring compared to the older Mario 3D games, and so on, but yes, definitely Rare is one of the best developers in history. Many Nintendo fans look down on Rare and haven't played their games.

Re: Poll: What Is Rare's Best Game?

Banjo-

Difficult question. Jet Force Gemini is amazingly entertaining and addictive and so are many others like Viva PiΓ±ata. Goldeneye 007 is basically perfect, one of the few shooters that is fun, thrilling and replayable. The Donkey Kong Country trilogy still is among the very best games ever made and definitely the tightest and more replayable 2D platformers along with Super Mario World. Banjo-Kazooie is the best 3D platformer. Killer Instinct has great characters and gameplay...

@Nontendo_4DS That's fine because most people haven't played the NES games... myself included. I'm playing them on Xbox. Thank you Rare Replay, best games collection ever.

Re: Going Back In Time - Do You Play Retro Games To Reconnect With Your Past?

Banjo-

@Utena-mobile Thanks!

Usually, I read all the files I find, but when I have beaten the game I often feel that I wasted too much time. Modern games tend to favour quantity over quality. They also get hectic too fast to catch the player, before the player even care about what's going on and don't know what the characters are talking about, or who the characters that they refer to are. They overwhelm and bore the players when they try to make a strong early impression.

There are some games that manage to be cohesive and build a story with scattered files without overwhelming players with what is perceived as padding. Some games that do it correctly are the Resident Evil titles, except 7 and 8 that include a lot of stupid and shoehorned stuff. The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games do storytelling masterfully with subtle cut-scenes and scattered files that are focused and logically connected with the other files, the environment and the story. They make the whole game balanced, immersive and real. The Nintendo game that also nailed it is Ocarina of Time, in this case with focused, coherent and well-written dialogue and cut-scenes, especially compared to newer entries such as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. When a team is able to make a video game that is not only inspired but captivating, the experience becomes priceless and unforgettable.

Re: Going Back In Time - Do You Play Retro Games To Reconnect With Your Past?

Banjo-

I agree with the existential psychologist because I feel similar things, but in my case, the quality of those games is the main reason to replay them. That means I don't replay games that I played in my childhood if they are not good enough.

Most of the games I played back then were on Nintendo and Sega systems. Nintendo used to make better games then than now, so I revisit them often. I still haven't played a better Mario than Super Mario World nor a better The Legend of Zelda than Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask or Twilight Princess. They feel infinitely more inspired and enjoyable. Same for Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.

Another reason I have found is the controls. Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3 feel more responsive and tight than Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. Super Mario World feels more responsive and tight than any New Super Mario Bros. game. That also make the older games more enjoyable and immersive.

Re: Sega Is "Evaluating" A New Virtua Fighter

Banjo-

After really solid Sonic 3D and 2D games, Sega is firing on all cylinders, finally! I can't wait to see those IPs and more revived, Virtua Fighter included.

@stinkyx What you say makes sense, keep Virtua Fighter pureness and add realistic elements on top of that to add some gameplay layers.

Re: Anniversary: Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Is 25 Years Old Today

Banjo-

@JohnnyMind It would be nice to get 3D and 2D The Legend of Zelda games, like we are starting to get proper 3D and 2D Sonic games now instead of titles that awkwardly combine styles and stages. I admit that I prefer The Legend of Zelda in 3D, but perhaps it's because the first one I played was Ocarina of Time. The last time I played it 100% was on Wii U, not the Virtual Console release but the unofficial port. It was the first time I played it in 60fps and it made me enjoy it even more. It's amazing the technical achievement that that Wii U fan release is.

We got two remasters on Wii U, The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, plus the new entry Breath of the Wild. After Skyward Sword being re-released on Switch, on top of making previous remasters available, the obvious choice is to remake Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, using some of the improvements seen on 3DS. I wouldn't mind them to be made for the next platform and look as good as the Wii U technical demo. The remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask would become my most anticipated games immediately, in spite of having the originals on several consoles.

Re: Anniversary: Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Is 25 Years Old Today

Banjo-

@JohnnyMind I completely agree! Ocarina.of Time 3D has subtle upgrades that I'm happy with. In spite of pre-ordering the limited edition of Majora's Mask 3D, I couldn't help feeling that I was playing a watered-down version, although it also has worthy additions like two fishing quests and a much better user interface. I also pre-ordered the limited edition of Twilight Princess HD. I'm a huge fan of these three games, but not of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, as everybody knows πŸ˜….

Re: Anniversary: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts Is 15 Today

Banjo-

@whmchrish Banjo-Kazooie (1998) is my favourite 3D platformer. I don't really consider Nuts & Bolts a platform game but more of a focused sandbox game. In the beginning, Banjo is too heavy, that's why I recommend training at Boggy's Gym for making the platforming more fun, because you're going to need him to move frequently and do some platforming for collecting items.

The vehicle construction is the core gameplay feature, but there is a proper builder unlike in Tears of the Kingdom, where I'd say the vehicle construction feels shoe-horned and ultimately boring, giving but also taking from the main concept of the game.

The key is to have a bit of patience because in Nuts & Bolts, it becomes addictive and intuitive to build and to use the vehicles. You feel under control and being able to experiment after a while, but you need to persevere. The variety of challenges make the concept shine.

Re: Anniversary: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts Is 15 Today

Banjo-

@nebzila Once you have unlocked a decent number and variety of parts and Banjo has trained a bit, it's amazing how much of your imagination can be translated to the game!

@smoreon My favourite part was to design my own vehicles to beat every challenge and record, finding the right balance for each.

Re: Anniversary: Rare's Grabbed By The Ghoulies Is 20 Years Old

Banjo-

@smoreon I agree, buddy. I played Grabbed by the Ghoulies on Xbox One, as part of Rare Replay. It's a frenetic game that looks and plays great in HD and 60fps, so it must be much better than on Xbox 360 at 30fps. I found it a lot of fun, very arcadey and challenging and with a great art style and music. I completed it 100%. It reminded me a bit of Luigi's Mansion, although the latter is obviously slow-paced. Grabbed by the Ghoulies, while simple, makes the most of its simplicity by forcing players to get creative and efficient, while being highly rewarding. It's one of the best arcade-style games that I've ever played. Perhaps, it was developed quickly, being Microsoft's first Rare game. I also think that Luigi's Mansion was developed in a short time, being a Gamecube launch game. Super Mario Sunshine arrived years later.

Over time, however, Grabbed by the Ghoulies has become one of Rare's less-appreciated titles – and even Rare is aware of this, as copies of it are found in overflowing dustbins in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

That's fundamentally a joke. Rare's games are full of that kind of humour making fun of themselves. Even the Donkey Kong Country games have a lot of that.

Re: Shocking Study Reveals 87% Of Classic Games Are "Critically Endangered"

Banjo-

@ParadoxFawkes I agree and Nintendo could do anything with the money they have. Instead, they closed the Wii U and 3DS shops and killed the Virtual Console. The most ridiculous thing ever, they skipped Super Mario Galaxy 2 in Super Mario 3D Almost-All-Stars and the collection was temporary.

If Nintendo released their games for PC and/or better consoles, I'd buy them there. I don't see the point in Nintendo's underpowered hardware anymore. At least, Wii was fun, had the Wii Remotes and most TVs were SD then. Imagine playing Switch games in 4K 60fps. Even handhelds like Asus Rog Ally and Steam Deck could do it. Nintendo's rigid anti-consumer policies and underpowered hardware stimulate piracy.

Re: Shocking Study Reveals 87% Of Classic Games Are "Critically Endangered"

Banjo-

I support official releases of retro games, hacking and piracy for preservation and availability. For instance, I soft-modded by SNES Mini and MD Mini and even after adding Aladdin and The Lion King, it didn't stop me from buying the Disney Classic Games collection, DLC included. I also bought The Disney Afternoon Collection in spite of my childhood not being related to the NES but to the SNES and N64.

I also soft-modded my Wii back in the day. It was the first time I did something like that and then the Wii U so I was able to play my Wii and GC games on my OLED TV. I didn't even need to resort to piracy because there is a homebrew app for Wii that lets you rip your Wii and GC games, and the same for Wii U but Wii U can't read GC discs. The funny thing is that Wii U is 100% natively compatible with Wii and GC, so Nintendo could have allowed Wii U to play GC games like Wii. If it was for Nintendo, I'd have to play GC games on my GC or on my Wii. They look better on the GC (the original design) because the Wii has cheaper video output!

Another thing I did was buy a modded PAL N64 console. The early PAL models, specifically the French ones, are the only N64 consoles that have RGB built in but a modification is needed to output it.

I'm in love with the homebrew scene, the things they do for improving and preserving video games is fascinating and it's for love. For instance, the guy that sold me the modified French PAL console didn't ask that much for it and there aren't many in the world.

I fully support when a publisher decides to bring those classic games back. Sonic Origins and the Fatal Frame/Project Zero games are among the few games I have pre-ordered this and last generation. Actually, I pre-ordered the digital deluxe editions of both Project Zero remasters. I know they are not that old but I thought they would never be re-released and the fact that they are niche makes me support them more. As much as I love Resident Evil, I know that the IP is safe thanks to Capcom and its commercial success.

Re: Rare Co-Founder "Always Intended" Banjo-Kazooie To "Grow" As A Franchise

Banjo-

In my opinion, Banjo-Kazooie is the best 3D platformer in history for many reasons: characters, script, objectives, challenges, art style, music and a classic European story in its heart.

That's very unpopular but my experience with Nuts & Bolts was also atypical. I quickly realised that it was not a proper platformer but a sandbox. Once you progressively unlock more parts, you can build better vehicles in very creative ways. Racing and flying, beating records and unlocking rewards with improved creations of your own is immensely satisfying. It's not a platformer but it's the most fun I've had with a sandbox game. That and Viva PiΓ±ata are excellent underrated games. I also love Grabbed by the Ghoulies (Rare Replay): the music, the arcade gameplay, the art style.

Re: Not Used Your Wii U In A While? It Might Be Dead

Banjo-

Wii U is better than Switch as a home console in almost every way but it was poorly marketed and presented with Gamepad in hand by Iwata as if it was a Wii peripheral.

shgamer wrote:

it seems to have the same problem with its battery as the PSPs: It runs out of power fairly quickly (through natural depletion) if noy used.

The problem with the Gamepad is that Nintendo had the brilliant idea that the Gamepad should be waiting indefinitely for a Wii U signal even though it's not necessary because the Gamepad has a power button to turn the console on and there is no advantage here because if you decide to use the pro controller or Wii Remote, the GamePad turns on as well. On top of that, if you try to turn off the GamePad because you are using the pro controller, you will turn off the console, unless you go far enough to interrupt the wireless communication.

The Gamepad battery is inevitably doomed because of Nintendo's brilliant idea. Lithium-based batteries should be kept about 50% if possible. The Gamepad will never turn off until the battery is empty (0%). It's relentlessly looking for a Wii U console. Nintendo could have changed this with a firmware update but guess what, they didn't.

Re: Finally, Sega Genesis Fans Can Feel Good About Their Version Of Street Fighter II

Banjo-

@liveswired Yes, Rare Replay is 4K on Xbox One X and Series X, the games look like never before! It's worthwhile getting an Xbox One console (any) just for this. Conker's Bad Fur Day looks like a remaster, it makes me you think how good the original assets were. This is the most advanced N64 game but every game looks awesome, the 720p to 4K upgrade in Xbox 360 games is noticeable.

As a side note, Grabbed by the Ghoulies is 60 FPS on all Xbox One consoles, it was originally 30 FPS. This might sound not important but in reality it makes the game much more enjoyable because it's an arcade quite fast-paced game. I liked it more that I thought I would. It's a bit shallow but real fun.

Re: Finally, Sega Genesis Fans Can Feel Good About Their Version Of Street Fighter II

Banjo-

@DoktorTotenKopf No problem . Google a guide. Note that to rip GameCube discs you need a Wii because Wii U doesn't play small discs but then you can play GameCube games on Wii U using the same HDD/USB flash memory. I use a USB flash memory.

Oh and the best thing is that you can use GameCube controllers. For that, use the official Wii U/Switch GameCube adapter or some other unofficial adapter.
