Re: Chromatic Is A FPGA-Based Game Boy From Palmer Luckey

Blast16

The only thing I’m interested in, with the right features and cost, is a FPGA home console designed for HDMI out to the tv.

The handheld options seem insanely oversaturated at this point and I’’m awaiting news on a couple console options still in development.

Either way, I have all the original hardware and OSSC, Framemeister, Raspberry Pi, dedicated FPGA consoles like AVS, SuperNt, MegaSg, Duo, and a 4-player MAME (pi) cabinet, so at this point it’s more a fascination with wondering if the experience can get any better or the minor tinkering will yield results that speak to me personally. I’ll be pre-ordering the Analogue 3D when that’s ready to go, and hope one of these FPGA all-in-one consoles comes to fruition, but I don’t have a need for the myriad of handhelds, unfortunately.

I’m excited to see how it all turns out!

Re: Sega's Dinosaurs For Hire Was Overhauled Thanks To Gunstar Heroes

Blast16

@no_donatello I’m definitely going to have to replay this soon and check that reference out hahaha! I love the Genesis “quirk” titles. Dinosaurs For Hire is absolutely one of them, and that’s a good thing. Like it or not, it helped give an identity to the Genesis. Miss those days when everything felt new and exciting in gaming. I think if you were a kid then you/we were spoiled to experience all the major generation leaps in games every 5 years or so. So many great games to return to or discover in hindsight. Still love it but it’s different.

Re: Intellivision Admits It Doesn't Have The Funds To Make The Amico

Blast16

A quick google search has revealed that Intellivision has raised about $40M off the announcement / crowdfunding of the amico, and that it was announced in May 2018 and was slated for an October 2020 release. Take about $25M with a grain of salt as that was reported by Intellevision themselves. The introductory pricing was between $249-299…the Switch Lite is cheaper than that. I am aware of the drama surrounding this thing but have never looked into it until now out of curiosity.

Dude, it’s never coming. It’s over.

Re: The Amazing RetroTINK 4K Upscaler Finally Gets A Price

Blast16

Whoa…I’ve got two Framemeisters and an OSSC in my setup. Been happy with them, but I also now own the dedicated FPGA consoles I want, which have largely served as replacements for my original hardware, if I’m being honest. At the moment, I’m not sure I’ll be into this especially at the price, but I get why it’s priced where it is. Just think I’ve moved past that want for the moment haha. But who knows, maybe I’ll circle back to this sooner than I think 🤔

Re: The Contra ReBirth Soundtrack Is Now Available To Preorder On Vinyl

Blast16

Nice! Now, how about a modern compilation physical copy of the three WiiWare titles Contra ReBirth, Gradius ReBirth, and Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth on a switch card? How long will it take? I don’t even think I’m in a minority of retro game players that want this badly. I’ll happily pay $40 to have this in the collection!

Re: Best GTA Games - Every Grand Theft Auto Game Ranked

Blast16

@BulkSlash agree. The more “arcadey” feel the game is, the more fun it is to play. This also applies to something as simple as the movement animation and the resulting feel of controlling your character. It got notably worse from PS2 trilogy to GTAV imo. I recall becoming frustrated with character movement and weight while playing GTAV. They’re all fun but I definitely enjoy the gameplay more in the old ones, overall.

In addition, I think the setting is also the most fun in Vice City, and Ray Liotta was just perfect.

Re: ROM Hacking Website No Longer Accepting Homebrew Games "Of Any Kind"

Blast16

Phew! Before I read this blurb I thought that the site might be shutting down and that would be awful news. In recent years I’ve been discovering some amazing ROM hacks and playing on OG hardware and the FPGA consoles. This site and everyone’s collective efforts help to keep these old games alive and to create new ones. Been playing TMNT Shredder’s Re-Revenge on Genesis, and Super Mario Ale Bros. Redux and Super Mario Bros. DX v4.4 on NES. Awesome stuff!

Re: All Outstanding Polymega Pre-Orders Will Ship This Year, Says Playmaji

Blast16

This is like the Paprium of game consoles lmao. I would know, I pre-ordered in 2016 and got it in 2021…

As soon as the Polymega was announced I just had this awful feeling that this would happen. I’m SO glad I didn’t invest in thin air. This is ridiculous. Then to continually lie about the shipping. I can’t imagine how difficult a product launch must be in this day and age but I have zero faith this will turn out well at this point.

Analogue CEO Taber is coming off like an amateur with his recent product reveal statements, but this is on another level.

I absolutely love the idea of the Polymega as I have a large retro games collection but I’ll stick with my aging OG hardware, Pi’s, modded Xboxes / Wii, Analogue and RetroUSB consoles.

Re: Anniversary: Super Mario Bros. 3 Is Now 35 Years Old

Blast16

Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of the best, if not the best 2D game of all time. My cousins let me borrow it for months when they were done with it in 1990 or 1991 and I spent so much time playing and replaying it. I still replay it to this day. It’s on my favorite games list, up there at the top with Castlevania 1 and 3, SOTN, RE4, Streets of Rage 2, etc.

Re: Atari Is Open To Pitches For A New Bubsy Game

Blast16

There’s so much ‘tude in this comment section, so much so that I thought it was 1993 😜

I played the heck out of Bubsy on Genesis and wanted to like it so much more. For as much of an attempted clone as it was, I still enjoyed it. Honestly I think it’s better than a good handful of the mascot clone games of the era—this doesn’t make it a good game though lol

Re: Could MiSTer Rival MARS FPGA Be The New King Of Retro Gaming?

Blast16

@samuelvictor I have a large console retro collection, and I could definitely sell a few hundred games and still have lots left to enjoy with my cartridges and CD games. That would easily fund an FPGA beast!

I hope that before too long, we get more or less a ready-to-use all-in-one retro FPGA box. I will circle back to MISTer and see where it is; I know it’s gotten a lot of developer support.

Re: Could MiSTer Rival MARS FPGA Be The New King Of Retro Gaming?

Blast16

@Exerion76 If Analogue makes the Pocket again I may look into this option, though I will not use it handheld mode so I've held off. I'm only interested in hooking up to a TV display so that's probably why I've tried to exercise some control, but it sounds extremely capable and kind of an all-in-one... I have to say I like the dedicated SNES, Genesis, NES, and Duo I have coming, but knowing all the cores that are available for it... that's pretty dang impressive.

But I don't buy handhelds so I don't have cart games to use either, or as strong of a nostalgia for most of the handheld stuff. Definitely tons of great games in those libraries though!

Re: Could MiSTer Rival MARS FPGA Be The New King Of Retro Gaming?

Blast16

@samuelvictor I agree—if the FPGA tech can do the job of my old hardware, I will pay up for something that can do it all.

Through the years I've acquired a bunch of hardware and many, many games, and I currently have a couple Pi 3b+ (one in a 4-player arcade cabinet), the Mega Sg, Super Nt, Retro AVS, modded Xbox, plus all my original hardware, some modded for HDMI, RGB, etc. I have Framemeisters, an OSSC, a handful of console cart Everdrives, USB adapters to use OG controllers on newer devices, new RetroBit SEGA controllers for new and original hardware (they are AWESOME btw).

I have tried and enjoyed it all except a dedicated gaming PC or a MISTer (i'm tempted by these mini PCs on Amazon!), and have enjoyed the journey of playing games I only could have dreamt of as a child/teen. I'm certainly a collector and enthusiast, but I play my games and I don't want to have to fuss around too much, though I do buy new hardware for the fun of it. I have a Analogue Duo on pre-order, and am watching the Pi 5 and this MARS FPGA to see what they can do and how user friendly they are. I am not a tinkerer beyond setting my video options and hot keys. I was and am a console gamer all the way. I want it to just work lol.

Re: Could MiSTer Rival MARS FPGA Be The New King Of Retro Gaming?

Blast16

This is very interesting… I’ll be keeping an eye on it. I’ve considered a mister a handful of times but as was mentioned above, I just want to play. I like adjusting options like scan lines and stuff, but in general I don’t want to tinker all that much. Having an all in one FPGA for arcade and 8-16-32-64-128 gaming would be sweeeet. Everything up through Dreamcast would be amazing to see all in one box.

And the soul still burns!

Re: Sega Forever Games Are Being Delisted From iOS And Android

Blast16

@Daggot if anyone were to buy Sega, I’d hope most for Nintendo. They’re in a healthier financial place now with Switch and I think their IP fits well on Nintendo consoles.

Now, if they could just stop releasing a sonic game every fall, that’d be a nice pattern to break…

Re: The Raspberry Pi 5 Is Launching Next Month

Blast16

I was just thinking about upgrading from my 3B+ models. I have two, one in an arcade cab and another as a portable console. I was thinking about getting a 4 this fall because of Run Ahead, but I guess I'll wait.

Very exciting news!
