Gunstar Heroes was voted the #17 best game of the SNES/Genesis/TurboGrafx-16 era. Just above Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest Just below Earthworm Jim.
I looked it up, saw the box art and it dawned on me that I had that game when I was 9. I thought "Hey...don't you transform into a plane or something?" Yup.
A while ago I googled for lists of the best Neo Geo games (I have no friends 😎). I looked for ranked lists at least 25 games long. I ended up finding 7 qualifying lists with 132 unique games and a total of 410 separate entries.
Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior ended up the #28 best NeoGeo game, and the 9th best NeoGeo fighting game.
I was very young, but it was a 2-player game on a black and white screen. One person sat down in front and their wheel controlled the steering of the fire truck. Another person stood behind the seated player and controlled the back of the truck, the "ladder" part. It was soooo cool!
I knew about the BattleTech centers, I don't know if it was in a magazine or what. But I never got to see one. The idea fascinated the hell out of me.
To plug the funding gap, the firms took on several side contracts, such as making laser tag venues and working with Jeep to create driving simulators for the Detroit Auto Show. "We built Jeep cockpits using the actual Jeep steering and gearshifts and everything, so that was a fun project," says Weisman.
I ABSOLUTELY stood in line for that Jeep simulator at the Detroit Auto show. If you've never been, it's like spending your entire day at a car dealership. So any entertainment is welcome! I remember driving over logs or something, and it felt like running over bumps, etc.
1979 - No way Speed Freak is better than Asteroids or Galaxian. 1986 - I think Metroid runs Dragon Quest / Dragon Warrior close. 1989 - Super Mario Bros. 3 is better than SimCity. 1990 - Final Fantasy is better than The Secret of Monkey Island. 1992 - Hard to keep The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past off the list, though I was amazed by Wolfenstein 3D. 1995 - Chrono Trigger is better than Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.
My friends and I were obsessed with Wolfenstein 3D, we actually hacked into our high school computer system to access it from one of our teacher's accounts. I would secretly play it from my computer at the back corner of the room in keyboarding class (I guess kids don't need that anymore).
Not long after that, I was lamenting that the video game industry was so dominated by FPS games, and I avoided them in favour of other genres. But now I'm happy to go back and discover those old classics.
Looking forward to the article that announces where this ends up available for streaming.
I believe the SNES Rings game was what I played a bit of at a comic book convention back in the day.
Sure, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest has problems, most glaringly the "must-call-a-hint-line" impossible puzzles. But the first time the day turned to night, my friends and I's jaws dropped.
The gameplay idea for the game is: what if your shmup ship is fully powered up from the very beginning of the game, and stays fully powered up for the entire game?
It turns out, that that is a very dumb idea for a shmup.
I run a weekly RetroGaming poll on Reddit. We just finished the Top 100 for the NES/Master System Era. Capcom ended up tied for second-most games on the list, with Sega, behind only Nintendo.
Here are the Capcom games that made the list:
Mega Man 3 Gargoyle's Quest II Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers DuckTales Mega Man 2 Bionic Commando Black Tiger / Black Dragon Ghosts 'n Goblins 1943: The Battle of Midway Mega Man 4 Mega Man
A while ago I googled for lists of the best Sega Genesis games. I looked for long lists each at least 50 games long, that were ranked. I assigned points based on rank and added them all up. I was left with 16 lists, 396 unique games and 1,465 total entries.
Langrisser / Warsong ended up a top 70 Sega Genesis game. Langrisser II / Warsong 2 ended up just outside the top 100.
This article reminds me of a recent article about the music industry. The writer said it was sad that 5% of musical artists make up 95% of all the stream listens, and that a perfect world, each artist would be listened to equally as much as every other.
Or...the fact that the most talented, quality output gets the most listeners/buyers/players is a better way to go?
A while ago I googled for lists of the best Sega Genesis games. I looked for long lists each at least 50 games long, that were ranked. I assigned points based on rank and added them all up. I was left with 16 lists, 396 unique games and 1,465 total entries.
James Pond 3: Operation Starfish cracked the Top 200 Genesis games. The other 2 James Pond games were not mentioned at all on any of the 16 lists.
I've seen "best games" lists for the Genesis leave them off for vastly inferior games.

Rolling Thunder 2 & Rolling Thunder 3 finished just outside the top 100.
I also run a weekly Retro Video Game Poll on Reddit. The original Rolling Thunder ended up the #76 best game of the NES/Master System era (ending up between Ghosts 'n Goblins and Renegade).
Most 2d Castlevanias since SotN have been easy, but they're designed that way to allow the player to choose their own difficulty. If you want a more challenging experience equip lower level weapons. Not everyone needs to beat the game with the Claimh Solais.
That reminds me of an interview about Super Mario World I read recently (it might have been Miyamoto). Anyway, I always thought World was "too easy", and I found myself just flying over most of the levels and "missing" a lot of the game. Anyway, they said World was designed so that hardcore players could choose to skip those big "power switches" that unlock the help blocks. This never occurred to me before and I am eager to replay it, this time without the switches, for a hopefully more satisfying challenge.
In an era when most consoles were notoriously hard to develop for, PS1 made things easy. It's no wonder it became the home to so many 3'rd party titles back then.
Another huge reason is that Nintendo went with cartridges for the N64 instead of CDs. Most developers saw the opportunities of CDs (full orchestration for one).
Cartridges were also much more expensive to produce, Nintendo made all of the cartridges controlling the manufacturing, and they demanded a large minimum initial order for each game, which made it a big gamble for developers. If a game flopped they lost a ton, and for small developers their very existence was at stake, just over the performance of one game released on the N64.
I always like it when complex and technical subject matter can be distilled into something a layman can understand.
There was only that one paragraph (that described a bit in-depth how exactly it was used, using technical terms) that went over my head, but it was brief enough that I know that info is just "not for me", and you're right, I got the general idea. And it was a nice article.
Rezon has also been called, perhaps, the worst soundtrack in video game history. With an annoying 4-second loop. For the whole game, except I think at bosses.
I'm a sucker for Japan-exclusive games, but even I draw the line at blatant Fighter's History-esque ripoffs.
There's always sales. I'll definitely grab it when it goes on sale. They published Cotton Reboot! and a year and half later it was 60% off. If Cannon Dancer follows that pattern, it will eventually be available for $12.
I keep reading about people being nostalgic for this movie. Yes, me and all my friends rushed out to see it. But on my school's playground, we were all unanimous that it was a piece of crap.
Switch plays all (ok most) of the Nintendo games ever made, but that's cheating. I think you have to judge consoles by the game library that originated on it. If you only count Switch games made after 2017? Then it doesn't look so hot.
I've always preferred 2D games to 3D, and the SNES was the best ever console for 2D gaming, before everything went 3D.
