@Slobbert I don't know what would have happened in the console wars if Sega would be around but I don't think we would have gotten san Andreas if the games were designed around the Dreamcast when you look at the size of the ps2 iso it's still quite large.
Anyone know if there's been any advance in either a solder less ode for PS1 or using the memcard pro with tonyhax international to boot games from the SD card?
@GravyThief i haven't tried a 5x I still.use the 2x pro and I'm happy enough with that running my NES, mega drive, PS1 and n64.
I still had to adjust my tv to stop overly processing or stretching the image but it's quite good on my Bravia OLED which is a huge space saver to having a crt and that's what I switched mainly. If you're comparing a PVM grade crt however you will never have that level of quality but against a consumer grade crt I think the 5x stacks up well enough.
I know the 5x veers heavily into per system customisations and seems like it would take some time to get it right.
I really don't think the entire internet praises the 5x for no good reason just because it was free there's digital foundry videos and my life in gaming and those guys have always crapped on products when it hasn't met expectations such as the recent mclassics
A reprint of the anniversary collection distributed globally would be nice I've tried tracking one down for switch in Australia but it's crazy expensive
@KingMike I think cartridge games have always been above the power of the console as far back as the NES extra chips were placed in carts to extend beyond the original expected capabilities of the base system
Less scummy mobile gaming tactics in classics there's no lights and alarm bells going off congratulating the player for getting a kill in a match with constant interruptions to tell them they are great. These things have been tested to trigger maximum dopamine release it's players are more lab rats than willing participants programmed to spend all their time and money within that game.
Classic games like Castlevania and ninja gaiden are more likely reward patience and memory with a game over screen than a congrats you're amazing screen like today's games until your perfect so I think relaxing isn't the right term.
But in some cases just having the game be a single player or couch co op experience and not going online reduces the stress around forced socialisation that in my opinion is sometimes off-putting talking to strangers through a microphone instead of in personal still drains you after a while or at least it does me. Friends are different but in person socialising is far more important than playing online which seems to be primarily how younger gamers play.
And I don't mean all modern games are like this Astro bot was a perfect game that doesn't employ scummy modern gaming tactics to keep a player hooked it's just a great game but more often than not if a game has to stop me every few minutes of gameplay to reward me with something it's trying to get its hooks in to sell me something down the line
This and croc are going to feel so good with the 30th anniversary duelsense.
It's odd that croc got delayed especially after my life in gaming had a few hours of love streams with the development team.
The comments section did get some eagle eye fans pointing out some flaws mainly around the UI and animations being off so it's possible they delayed it to get everything right out of the box.
However given the physical edition wasn't printing until late 25 it could of always been planned.
As for gex I think this one was just announced to early and was in line behind some of remasters
Fairly confident this exists to sucker in people just dipping their toes into retro gaming because they pulled out their old ps2 from a cupboard one day.
I'll be honest I'm not the best judge of image quality i use a very old retrotink 2x with standard composite input from my systems via a AV switch the concept of a ossc confuses me especially with its add ons and I'm perfectly happy with what I have
but even I know by just a glance of that video this product is pure garbage
Nostalgia probably plays a huge part in my preference but I was mega drive kid and always preferred the synth beats sound over the strings of the SNES I feel like that's the case for most people but the reality is both chips are highly capable.
I really can't get behind any Kickstarter projects for this reason i get the need for funding for the project but time and time again it's bad news and undeliverable promises.
Mighty number 9 was licky to have actually shipped in some capacity but it's clear the scope was far to wide for a small Dev team on a Kickstarter shoe string it really should have been targeting pc, ps4, xb1 at the time.
There's appreciating the console for its merits and there's the reality that it was a failure.
To me it feels like there's a tendency for fans of a failed platform to rewrite history and that's fine it can still be a favourite to them but the reality of it most people never actually saw a Saturn in real life or a Dreamcast let alone played one so many people missed out on some great experiences but that's just the world we live in.
As someone in a region where the mega drive was a huge success the Saturn at its time of release was quickly forgotten.
Video rental stores didn't stock games for the system which is outright a sign of its failure and there was no talk about it after it actually hit stores and I recall stores not even stocking it long-term at least in Australia
@Razieluigi it seems like there was alternative platforms specifically for gaming and retrospective content where this wouldn't be an issue but YouTube has long since pushed those services into obscurity and closure.
I don't see anything coming to rival yt anytime soon as hosting costs and making it worth the creators time is tricky.
It's already astonishing when I see some amazingly crafted retrospectives like the recent 32x historic nerd that only get 120k odd views vs some of the everyday garbage on the platform garnering millions of views.
Great article Capcom Disney games on the NES were magical but I had switched to the mega drive by this time I am still yet to play this I'll have to rectify that.
Actually it's quite timely in that I picked up world of illusion on the mega drive for Christmas this year to play with my kids it was my first 16 but Disney game and sold me on the upgrade way back I was late to leave my nes behind
It's a shame these 16 bit era games have been left to rot by the rights holders after playing through again with the kids who play modern games to everyone agrees they hold up
I was there i was desperately asking to have croc for Christmas that year. I didn't have a n64 but my friend did so I was familiar with all it's games to.
To me I was so hyped by the marketing the game looked amazing however when I got the game and played through the start of it something was clearly off and it was the controls then progressing into the ice levels it became frustrating and difficult especially as a kid.
So honestly it didn't take me long to abandon croc for other established games like crash.
Marketing seemed to be absolutely perfect it's TV spots made the game shine yet the game didn't hold up and that is why I think croc was kind of forgotten in many ways.
I think the role Nintendo played in the 80s was vital to the industry but I think US gamers underestimate the role Nintendo played outside of the US growing up in Australia I recall how popular Sega was with the mega drive and it was on fairly even footing but the n64 was not all that relevant here compared to the PS which was a juggernaut
I'm hopeful that they announce if a physical release is planned for this one upfront. It's been a bit of a pet peeve lately to see classics re released as digital only but then a physical gets announced 12 months later.
I would honestly love a ps5 croc release sitting next to my PS1 version

Re: "Might Be Time To Go Back To A Corporate Job" - Trump's Tariffs Come Into Effect
@Zuljaras I get that if I want to buy a retrotink 4k I'm looking at $1000 AUD which is more than a ps5 and a switch plus games.
Country taxes are very real and painful for niche hobbies like ours

Re: Limited Run Games Apologises For Shipping 3DO Games On CD-Rs
It's not just about compatability is it. Pressed discs simply last and can be stored for what some people say 100 years before any disc rot sets in.
From a preservation viewpoint it's more about quality and longevity these brunt CD-R discs might be lucky to see 10 years of life.
