If it makes you feel any better, the person didn't learn all of game development in 5 months, they specifically learned how to make homebrew for the Game Boy in five months. I'm sure they had extensive experience as a programmer before taking this on. If you're motivated to do game dev but lack the technical skills, then I would definitely look into GB Studio which simplifies the coding experience. You'll still be learning the fundamentals of programming, just by using a graphical interface rather than writing code. I'd also recommend going into it with a specific idea in mind, like a simple platformer game you'd like to make, rather than the abstract idea of "learning game dev". You'll find the path to learning to be much clearer and more rewarding.

Re: The Game That Inspired The Term 'Roguelike' Is Now Available On Switch

@Axelay71

That's just because it has lost all meaning at this point. Most games that claim to be "roguelike/lite" have literally nothing in common with Rogue except maybe they might randomly generated levels. If you have a game where you have to start at the beginning each time ("permadeath"), you're now a roguelike. Every NES game has now retroactively become a roguelike.

@gingerbeardman

Thanks for your insight. I love my Playdate and really want it to succeed. I haven't touched it much for well over a year since there wasn't a whole lot going on back then, so I've been happy to go through the catalog and catch up. Coincidentally, I follow @vxcl on Twitter, so I've seen your games on my timeline. And I may have just bought a couple of them

Really makes me want to revisit the game I worked on for Playjam 2... maybe one day.
