@Damo Advertising is delivering a company's message as they intended, no journalism involved. That is not always about money. If you look at word of mouth advertising you can see that clearly. Being a fan and being a journalist are different, so if you like something you still have to look into all the facts. The work speaks for itself, and it's not even about me or anyone else not liking it, it's just the job you did to help your readers find the truth, not delivering corporate messages for companies you like.
Really this is my hot take on it. If you don't want to see it the way we see it and own what that interview with Tommy was I don't know what to tell you. You obviously aren't too worried about it if you can't even say, "we all knew there were issues and I should have asked real questions about the product". And if your employer is cool with that than I'm not cool with NL anymore, simple as that. I'm not going to hang out here and troll you, I got fired up by this article, had my say and am moving on.
@Damo I never said it had to be money, maybe you're just trying to get on the ins with hardware manufacturers by playing super soft. Maybe you thought it would be good for the site and given how Tommy is so self conscious of criticism didn't want to rub him the wrong way. I know how Tommy works giving the inside story and everyone else is on the outside (according to him). Honestly I don't think they are nice enough to pay anyone, they have been using influencers for the same thing and getting them to invest.
@rockodoodle The Atari VCS has much better specs and actually came out. As jaded as I felt about that project this is just a huge scam. Helped along by the journalistic integrity of NL for asking no questions, wanting no proof and allowing a CEO to slander critics in a trusted space like Nintendo life. It is just plain illegal practices.
I also don't trust anything this site does anymore as they hide advertising as articles. Damien did the same thing with the polymega but at least that is real.
I saw a podcast about this article and it reminded me that this is why I stopped going to this site... I honestly can't believe it's still up after so much of this has been proven to be lies.
@getyourak Switching games into progressive mode is a pain as well. A system that forced the game into progressive plus used hdmi and made by Sony they could easily charge 200-250 and people would eat it up.
The options on Xbox Series X for still playing OG Xbox games are sparse as well, I could do with a more reasonable sized xbox while I'm at it. Playing Morrowind in 4k is pretty cool but not too many games supported.
@KillerBOB I was under the impression the cores themselves are what held together the compatibility of the software. Like you program all the system level operations into the core. Not saying it can't do a more accurate rom representation but it seems like it becomes whatever the core is programmed to be. Can't imagine they aren't basing those off previous projects.
Maybe I am just getting confused by type of cores. So you can program in an instruction set into the fpga as well?
This would be good if they had people playing retro games but I don't want to see someone rush through a level of COD on live tv. The original show was very peculiar and bizarre enough to watch quite a few from youtube.
@KillerBOB Xbox cannot be easily emulated because it's basically a mix of proprietary directx components. It would be like reverse engineering a windows virtual machine. Sure some programs have done it like Wine but it took years and years to even get that working.
For 500 bucks they couldn't have popped a dvd drive in there in case they could get gamecube or ps2 working in the future? Do enough places still really produce cd drives to make it cheaper. It still makes no sense to me.
Very impressive they were able to get the light gun working. I still think for this price it would be nice if you could just load roms on it instead of having to match up translate files with carts.
It will be interesting to see how well it sells. Should tell a lot about the current state of the hardcore retro scene out there.
@tofarawaytimes Illegal? The devs themselves said it was done and leaked it. The only reason it didn't get made was because Nintendo didn't want to spend money on the superfx 2 chip it needed to run properly.
Sorry but if a game gets released in rom form by the people who made it, I don't feel bad about downloading it and playing it.
Try new ideas, play around, yes. But at least make us a mainline game once in 2 decades without it having gimmicky controls (Zero) or half the battles on the ground (Assault). They know why we loved star fox 64, they brought it back out on 3DS.
Nintendo just baffle me sometimes with how they ignore such an easy win.
@MeowMeowKins neogeo is a system based 100% off sprites. Given most modern cards are not going to process only a bitmap directly it could theoretically be only 2d capable and process graphics on a 2D plane instead of 3D.
The original MVS had a 2D graphics processor, meaning even super Nintendo had a better grasp of 3d without superfx
@MeowMeowKins Why speculate about what the hardware can be hacked to do? Plus maybe he is talking about model 2 or 3 which would require actual polygon power in the graphics card. Just because it's modern doesn't mean it's going to play everything like a computer can.
@KevvyLava I agree, you have to enjoy doing the setup work and learning about the programs. If that's a hassle for you being able to pay to get out of it is worth it.
@TG16_IS_BAE lol it was supposed to be the entire antipiracy measures, thats why once people figured out how to launch CDs there was no need for a modchip
@TG16_IS_BAE Most of my emulated stuff looks way better and have insanely faster loading times. I think a lot of youtube channels like gamesack prefer to use the real hardware to get the real experience of everything, including glitches and loading. With an emulator you might think a game is better than it actually was.
@TG16_IS_BAE software, it basically can download media and images for and organize your games on a frontend then call any application to launch them, including retroarch. It's a lot of setup and tweaking but I love playing around with emus so it's fun for me.
@Damo I would think an OS update could easily do Dreamcast if they can get an open source bios to use. Problem might stem from it being illegal to use an official bios.
Yeah I know it's more legit and to use bigbox you need a full PC and all. It is probably a great product in that case because I can't get enough of organizing and chronicling games with bigbox.
To be fair though you can rip games onto your PC that you own and launch them in emulators, it's just a lot more work.
I could see this being somewhat useful for Sega Saturn as they get more rare, but you still need an old school tv for it not to look like crap coming out all analog. Apparently a good converter like framemeister will cost around 450 bucks.

Re: Intellivision Closes Amico Fundraising Ahead Of Schedule
The history of this site and this product is embarrassing. People lost money because you were excited about landing an interview....

Re: Would You Just Look At This Tiny Bubble Bobble Arcade Machine
180 dollars for a replica of a game we all played on nes.
Re: Polymega Release "Still On Track" Despite Production Problems
I think they just want more profit, so they just never made the hardware, desperately waiting for component prices to go down

So does it take advantage of fast loading? That's one thing I love about emus, hitting the throttle button when it's loading to get past the waits.
From what I hear you will need it for neo geo cd, psx and saturn had their fair share of pain as well.

Re: Hardware Review: MiSTer FPGA - A Tantalising Glimpse Into The Future Of Retro Gaming
Cores and roms. It's a retroarch clone at heart. I don't see anything proprietary about this outside of it's design.
NVM I think I'm confusing emulator cores with FPGA schemas.

All of that and it uses real batteries. Forget it what a pos for not even having a small lithium.

@MeowMeowKins because you basically told someone that they could hack it and load Sega games on it and were making a random guess

@TioRogerio same with baseball stars, 2 is superior but we get the first
Lineup is nearly identical to the international mini release.
Re: Hardware Review: Believe The Hype, Polymega Is The Ultimate All-In-One Retro Machine
@Damo Yeah man but you still need the 32x cart to play them, that is where all the game code is on. Are they making a 32x extension?
They are 32x+SegaCD games, meaning you needed both machines because 32x had no cd quality audio.

@Damo there was no 32x CD games, you are thinking of games that required a 32x and a Sega CD for the fmv and sound parts.
Re: Hardware Review: Believe The Hype, Polymega Is The Ultimate All-In-One Retro Machine
@TG16_IS_BAE oh yeah it could hold like 1.2gb instead, I forgot they used a different hardware on the optical
They aren't compatible which is why people are using disc emulation on Dreamcast hardware noe
