Re: Talking Point: With Sonic's Movie Series Set To Cross A Billion Dollars At The Box Office, It's A Shame His Creator Doesn't Get Credit

KitsuneNight

It's like Bill Finger all over again.
At least Finger has been finally been getting his due, even if it comes too late for the man himself.
Finger died in 1976.

Hopefully Ohshima won't have to wait that long.
But before that happens we, the retro gamers, know at least.
And that hopefully counts for something.

Edit: for people who have no idea what I am on about.
Bill Finger is generally accepted as the co -creator of Batman.
And was conned out of credit and financial benefits by Bob Kane for decades.

Nowadays the creator credits for batman read "created by Bob Kane with Bill finger"

@smoreon
More exposure via the Wii means more people are more nostalgic for it nowadays.
And nostalgia is the reason prices go up. ( for the most part)

And the best way (and cheapest way ) to play cube games nowadays is to buy a Wii with it's component cable.

The Cube component cable is offensively expensive.

I dont Consider the Cube a failure either, it has some great games but it was railed roaded, like the DC was, by the monolith that is the PS2.
The PS2 was just a monster.

Re: Anniversary: Sega Saturn, The Most Successful Console "Flop" Of All Time, Turns 30 Today

@N64-ROX

Well almost everybody likes an underdog.
Personally I have been in to the Saturn since 1999.
I went to a gameshop with birthday money to buy ps1 games.
They had a Saturn on display with VF 2 running, and I was sold.
Even better they were offloading the machine with 5 games for 249.
15 min later i was walking home with a brand new Saturn and 5 games.

I am very familiar with the machine,it's not just its underdog status and unknown library that push it to the fore front but that its a 2D monster.

Only the DC and Neo Geo can out perform it in 2D.
Any 2D game on the ps1 is better on the Saturn, with more modes better animation more frames, better colors.

The Capcom VS games on the ps1 are weighed down with loading times choppy animations and even worse they ripped out the real time partner system.

On the Saturn you can change partners on the fly in real time.
On the ps1 you can only play as your tag team partner if you lose a round with your first character

As for 3D, the Saturn uses quads instead of polygons which gives it a distinct somewhat scruffy look.
It has way more "quirky" games then the ps1 has though.

@Sketcz

The defiant weirdness is what makes the Saturn fun and worth playing and collecting for.
There is nothing quite like the Saturn out there
And it's all the better for it.

Even if in hindsight.

@smoreon

The Cube has had a resurgence of sorts, or at least more exposure because a good chunk of all the Wii consoles, at least 80 million of them, can play cube games.

Making it very easy to pick up and play Cube games with out an actual Cube console.

So technically the Cub is not a failure, and had quite a lot of exposure to gamers over the years.
Easiest way to play Cube games these days is pick up a Wii with a component cable.

The Saturn has no such path.

Re: Anniversary: Sega Saturn, The Most Successful Console "Flop" Of All Time, Turns 30 Today

KitsuneNight

@Starless

Then the Saturn would probably have more Japan only games and be even higher regarded.
But the Dreamcast had to be made, Sega was bleeding money the Saturn was dead in the west.
They were between a rock and hard place.

The Dreamcast was a hail mary and it failed.
While the Saturn was a victim of the struggle for control between Sega of Japan and America.

And the failure of the Sega CD, the 32X, and the cancellation of those machines and the Megadrive in 1996, despite the assurance they wouldn't a few months earlier, to focus on the Saturn.

All that combined with the surprise launch of the Saturn in 1995 with a disastrous launch line up that looked terrible ( but played well )
Scruffy 3D
Hard to develop for,
And most of its best games staying in Japan.
Mediocre PR, and the ps1 and N64 running roughshod over the Saturn.

All that and more buried the machine.

@CocktailCabinet

Oh for sure .
The Saturn was difficult to work with and its 3D looks scruffy at best when anybody other then Sega developed for it

Though that scruffiness has a certain amount of charm

@gb_nes_gamer
It didnt.
The Dreamcast was out in Japan in 1998. the Saturn was on life support in Japan by 1999.
It's last game was released in 2000
Most big name sequels go cancelled for the Saturn
No Tomb Raider 2 or Resi 2 for example.
Just the originals

Re: Anniversary: Sega Saturn, The Most Successful Console "Flop" Of All Time, Turns 30 Today

KitsuneNight

I would argue that the Dreamcast is the most succesfull "flop".
However the Saturn holds a special place in my heart, and I have an inordinate amount of appreciation for the console.

Its best games sadly stayed in Japan.
I doubt it would have turned the tide against the ps1 but with those games localized the Saturn could have made afar better showing of it.

But it is what it is.

I stil have copies of the UK Saturn Magazine and the latter issues are equal parts sad as the Saturn dies a slow death, and impressive .
Because the magazine appeared to keep to want to keep the Saturn afloat by sheer force of will and import reviews and recommendations.

And if the Saturn was a failure its only a failure commercially, any other way it has where it counts.

Push back against the historical narrative ?
Yes.

@AG_Awesome

It gets even worse.
He plays nothing but Battle For Bikini Bottom.
He streams 10 hours a day scoweling because he is anticipating a reset flips his ***** when it happens ( usually with in 5 minutes )
And then starts all over again
Grinding the same 44 min run in to paste, shaving off a single second.

I got way too many games to play as well, ( 1200 on steam 800 on gog ) speed running is not for me.
But its fascinating to peek in that world and see what they can do.

Re: Mario 64 Speedrunning Declared "Dead" After Insane Feat From "The Greatest Speedrunner Of All Time"

KitsuneNight

@AG_Awesome

If you want to see the real dark side of speed running look up SHiFT ( spelled like that ) or @shiftposting on twitch
He is a Spongebob Squarepants speedrunning.

And that's all he does
He has spend the last 8 years and 20,000 hours grinding that game in to powder.
And has held the world record since 2016.
But thats all he does.
He boot the game grinds and flips his ***** when things go wrong.
He has an extremely short temper, and it take s little to set him off.
It's honestly a bit of a sad state of affairs.

Same goes for Cosmo Wright.

Personally I dont have the patience to speedrun, the grind puts me off.
I already dislike grinding in JRPG's , and that eventually yields results.
The weathertenko for example is literally driving in to a wall and executing just the right inputs to make it over the wall and not get grabbed by Lakitu.

My controller would go flying after half an hour.

Re: This GameCube Mini Is Downright Adorable

KitsuneNight

@Deuteros

In no particular others
Smash Bros Melee
Mario Kart Double Dash
All the Cube Resident evil games not just the garbage 0 and 4*
All the Cube Zelda games.
Luigi mansion

( * I hate 4 for the way umbrella is dispatched in a cutscene the game never recovered from that for me )

Re: Mario 64 Speedrunning Declared "Dead" After Insane Feat From "The Greatest Speedrunner Of All Time"

KitsuneNight

@AG_Awesome
TAS runs are often used to perform either a theoretical perfect run.
Or perform a glitch or trick, that's theoretically possible or on the edge of possible.
A proof of concept

Like the weathertenko trick in Mario Kart 64 in this Summoning Salt video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y99Wj-NStok

A real person has to put in thousands of hours and attempts to do anything
They don't just rush through a game
Each speedrun is the result of insane grinds, pixel perfect execution, memorization, glitches and skill.

Re: Remember When Dragon Quest III's Launch Triggered Arrests In Japan?

KitsuneNight

@Sketcz
Bit of both I think.
These days we all have such enormous backlogs to wade through that the excitement for a cool new game just isn't there anymore.

If only because of the sheer inertia of our collections.
I finished 70 games this year and that's way more games I ever owned combined as a kid let alone beat.

When you have less you appreciate it more.

Edit: and these days games need to be installed.
Then download a massive day one patch, usually bigger then the game and by the time its all said and done you are 3 to 4 hours along and all the interest has kinda evaporated.

As opposed to chucking in a disc or plugging in a cart turning the machine on and away you go.

I'll be going all nerdy here,
Well nerdier, but that PowerMac in the office photo, looks like a Quicksilver.
Which was released in mid 2001 and the first Powermac G4 to have a DVD burner
As wel as coming in 733 mhz or dual 800 mhz configurations.
They were monstrously powerfull for 2001.
With a pricetag to match ( 3500 for the dual cpu Quicksilver)

@BlaizeV
Sleeping Dogs is set in Hong Kong.
And really is too much of an excellent game to be called a copy cat.

Re: After The Epic Failure Of The Intellivision Amico, Tommy Tallarico's New Goal Is Becoming A Backgammon Legend

KitsuneNight

@RetroGames
The fact that you paint everybody who disagrees with you as "spoiled children and sheep", does not exactly engender people to your point of view.

If anything it will cause people to disagree with you more on principle, because you implicitly insult them.

Being an adult also means knowing when to fold in an argument.
Not to talk down to others or use ad hominems.

Tallarico made a spectacle of himself on the internet and people will have strong opinions about that.

Re: SuperSega FPGA Console Shown Running Master System, Genesis And Saturn Games

KitsuneNight

Stil pretty dubious as far as I am concerned.
Why doe si thave so many VGA connectors ?
What's it doing with a cf card connector instead of micro sd ?

The jump cuts are dodgy as well, we don't see the games loading.
Or even starting.
They are just there right away.

Even IF this thing works as advertised Sega will still come down on them like a ton of bricks for the use of their brand name.

This is a piece of performance art to get people to invest and ignore the numerous red flags going off.
