@BulkSlash Yeah, it's definitely different when you go back to something you've already played when you were younger. I doubt many of the GenZ'ers that were surveyed are relaxing by playing Super Ghouls n Ghost for the first time 😂 I suspect most of them were playing stuff from their childhood like N64 or early PlayStation or something as they did mention nostalgia played a big part in what they were playing. Likely stuff that many on here don't even consider 'retro'
@PKDuckman Depends what you are playing. There are plenty of modern games that don't have microtransactions, and even if they do, can be ignored quite easily. I can't think of a single game that I've played that I felt like they were really pushing microtransactions to the point where it spoiled the game - maybe it's just that I've tuned them out, or I'm not playing those types of games.
@HoyeBoye I guess it doesn't actually say what games they are playing, or what their definition of 'retro' is - one of the comments on the Metro article says PS4 is retro for example and someone responds that it isn't, but PS3 is. A lot of folk don't consider even the GameCube to be retro.
I keep hearing people say that modern games are too easy with the likes of auto-save, no perma-death and hold the users hand too much etc, so just a bit surprised to hear younger gamers going back to them for relaxation.
Retro games are more relaxing? Most retro games I've gone back to - especially action games - are usually hard as nails, probably due to my middle-aged reaction times not being what they used to be. Maybe GenZ'ers haven't quite slowed as much?
Dreamcast is by far my all-time favourite console.
I re-shelled mine a few months ago with a cheap shell from AliExpress. It actually looks pretty decent - certainly better than the yellowing one it replaced. I also installed a PicoPSU, a GDEmu, replaced the noisy fan with a near-silent one and replaced the soldered-on internal battery with a rechargeable one. I haven't done the HDMI mod, but to be honest it looks great using VGA out so I don't think the HDMI mod is worth it for me.
@OorWullie Sorry, I literally just meant the actual game title 😅 The Japanese title Hard Puncher: Blood Soaked Glory sounds way cooler than The Final Round.
"Nobody wants to awkwardly hit trigger buttons on the backside of a portrait handheld..."
Not-so-sly dig at the Analogue Pocket there I think, although I can't say I necessarily disagree. I love my Pocket, but the one thing I'd happily change (apart from the expensive shipping obviously) is the form factor - GBA-style horizontal form would've made it perfect for me.
The Pocket is also the main reason that I probably won't be buying this. It looks really good, but I just can't justify owning both at this point.
I'm assuming the carts released for this will also work on the Pocket if they also work on the original hardware?
Not bothered about a Steam version, but I would have liked a Mega Drive/Genesis ROM tier. Shipping to the UK makes the physical version quite expensive, although I have backed it anyway.
@nocdaes Without a doubt the Analogue Pocket has heightened my interest in Game Gear. I've bought dozens of carts over the last year or so, despite never owning original hardware. I was actually tempted to try and collect the full (PAL) library, but there are a couple of games that are way above what I'm willing to pay
Ouch! Those carts in the pics look awful. I would've probably modded the carts too if I'd had the need to (I was blissfully ignorant to region differences when I had a Mega Drive), but mine would've been a hell of a lot neater than those.
@nocdaes I haven't got the other Illusion games (yet), but have got the Shinobi games in the backlog. I do like Fantasy Zone - haven't got the GG version, but have played it on other systems.
@delt75 @nocdaes Same here. I've never had a Game Gear and probably bought more GG carts last year than I did for any other system. Barring a few exceptions, they are mostly pretty inexpensive too. Just finished Castle of Illusion over the weekend.
The relatively short lifespan of the original has kinda put me off buying an Evercade if I'm honest. Feels like just as I'm about to buy one they announce something new. They replaced the original just as I was going to buy it and now I've been holding off getting the EXP on the off chance they replace it as soon as I pull the trigger. Def won't be buying one until at least November now...
I've got the Goodboy Galaxy GBA physical cart on order from the Kickstarter. Unfortunately its being distributed via 1st Press Games, so not confident I'm going to get it any time soon. Currently showing 'Winter' - doesn't say which year though....
@Geonjaha of course there's always someone going to complain - I just think if they'd announced it in July at the same time as the announcement about shipping the latest batch - and given customers that were still waiting for their pre-order the option to upgrade - it would've generated a lot of goodwill from those that were still waiting.
I guess the numbers still waiting for pre-orders meant they couldn't risk too many people wanting to upgrade to the LE version and potentially not having enough - the announcement said numbers were extremely limited.
@Serpenterror Except that the final day for me to cancel the original pre-order was 20th August so cancelling not an option. I'm guessing most of the pre-orders that are shipping this month have received the email or even their Pocket by now and are not able to cancel if they wanted to. Would've made more sense to announce the LE one and allow folk to cancel before a big batch of pre-orders got shipped.
Thankfully I don't like the LE one, so not really an issue for me personally, but might be for some.
Releasing a limited edition model a month after finally shipping orders that were placed nearly 18 months ago isn't a good look IMHO. They could've at least given those waiting longest the option of the glow-in-the-dark model before they shipped the originals.
Looks like this Limited one is going to be on sale before I've even received my original order from Nov last year (some have been waiting since April22). Got the 'processing' email a couple of weeks ago, then the 'shipping' email on Friday with a tracking number - it still hasn't moved yet...
@JackGYarwood Not sure if it's related, but the digital version seems to have disappeared from the eShop (in the UK at least) since last week. Doesn't appear in any searches and Deku Deals also saying it's not available, with the price history stopping on 9th Aug 23
Never had a Game Gear, but decided to get the adaptor with the Analogue Pocket and have been building up a reasonable collection while I wait for it's arrival - I have a few of these already.

Much prefer the Japanese title over the boring generic one we got.
