@Daniel36 I think the best tool I found for AI so far which studios need to begin employing is using AI to digitally upscale TV shows stuck on video. For animated TV unless they want to spend millions reanimating a TV show they need to use train AI to upscale old cartoons.
Sad this has happened although their remakes haven't been very good. Getting rid of the FMV, especially in one that's heavy with it like Riven was a massive mistake. I'd happily buy their games if one of the major components of the originals wasn't missing. š
A well written and well researched article. Glad I could help a bit with your research John! I think this article needs to be reprinted in one of your books. The more people from across the world who read this article the better. When VGHF is making claims that Asterix was never released on the NES just because it didn't get a North American release there's a problem of ignorance. We shouldn't be in this situation. My concern is I think some gamers wish to remain ignorant.
"how many British gamers, for example, are aware of video game history in France, Spain, Germany, South Africa, Hong Kong or Brazil?"
I know about French, German and Brazilian gaming history but really nothing about Spanish, South Africa or Hong Kong gaming.
@gingerbeardman "every game article is named for the USA version, rather than the original or most popular version of the game (which is what the say it is supposed to be)"
Yep! It should say Sega Mega Drive, not Genesis which is just the North American name.
I think it would be so cool if the new film featured characters we haven't seen adapted from the video game series for the 1994 movie and if older characters are used get the 1994 movie actors to portray them.
@Damo I bought some years ago an overlocked Mega Drive. It really ruined my gaming for some of the games I had. Some Mega CD stuff was unplayable or self-edited while a few Mega Drive games couldn't run correctly. Took me some years however to figure out what was going on.
If it's as biased in its sources as his Amico doc I'm not interested in watching. š
@bring_on_branstons His Amico doc naively thought it would bring both sides together when by its structure ended up just providing more ammo for the trolls and detractors. How's that for a legit criticism of Slope's work?
I honestly didn't feel the DKC games needed to be so hard. The game had enough levels to be quite lengthy. If Crash is like DKC in that regard it's not a tutorial the player needs but an easier time making it through the levels.
@Sketcz No problem. It really shows the American centric viewpoint of video games. Not sure if it's him or someone else in the article also points to the lack of access to the archive although to be fair the same criticism could be levelled at the VGHF as well. Yet now both VGHF and Embracer are trying to make their archives accessible, it's just a slow process.
@Sketcz There does seem to be a lot of hate towards European gaming because it's computer based. Arguments like "you have only one button" or "platform games make no sense", it's just a different way of playing games like Japan and America but certainly YouTubers like Game Sack don't help.
I also have trouble supporting the Video Game History Foundation due to their American centric bias which actually lead them to criticising Embracer wanting keep a video game archive as well because according to them it doesn't make sense as American created video games they should have the only archive. It's just not helpful. š¤¦āāļø
@MegaManFan I never thought about that. That is a great point. I worry more for people who aren't interested in learning and recently over on a Discord I have come across such people. It's very frustrating.
@PinballBuzzbro I suppose their argument to this is always "well if those games were good why aren't they still making those games series today". It doesn't take into account rising costs and developers across Europe going out of business as a result.
@-wc- The problem is it's revisionism and at worst it's not educating future generations because if the US got their way in 20 years time you wouldn't know what a ZX Spectrum was. It has far more serious repercussions than regional ignorance.
@MontyMole Remember the NES only took off around Christmas 1990 because of the great pack in of TMNT with an NES. That was to the NES what the Batman Pack did for the Commodore Amiga.
@Sketcz If anything I think you'd be more than qualified to cover European gaming. A combination of your book experience and that you're willing to learn about that region of gaming. My biggest annoyance is European gaming not being seen as valuable as gaming released in America. Japan is also guilty of this ignorance. People outside of Europe should be celebrating and valuing games more from Europe. My boi Zool needs more love. š
@zazou703 I was generalising since it's mostly Americans but I fear that todays generation globally will remain ignorant of European gaming history. As far as America is concerned their history is what happened to everyone. šŖ
@Magic_Salmon_Pro One of the advantages of growing up in Europe is the market allows you to experience gaming from the three major regions rather than two.
@MegaManFan It's weird because I didn't even know there was a crash until American YouTubers talked about it. Shows how the UK was very unaffected.
