Well that's me gonna be busy re-reading the original 48 issues of Super Play then, and marvel at the issues where my name featured in the letters/Final Fantasy Forum pages. Nice one π
Do a Megadrive rendition of the SNES Super Adventure Island OST then we'll talk π no but seriously as others have said, the SNES and MD have their own unique way of working, and when the devs made the effort both consoles could produce some proper ear pleasers.
Bubble Bobble on the NES for me. I love the arcade - and it swallowed up many a lunchtime when I was at college - but there's just something about the NES version I love that little bit more.
Bought this on import as soon as I could after its release having enjoyed the hell out of Mystical Ninja on the SNES previously and oh my god it did not disappoint. Fun as heck, self-aware NPCs, dungeons that were a pleasure to go through, and THE SOUNDTRACK. My word, one of my favourites on the system - loved how each of the dungeon themes got funkier as you progressed through said dungeons. My only bugbear was the camera, which could be an absolute pain at times, but that could not detract from my enjoyment of the experience. Solid 9/10 for me.
The first Mystical Ninja on the SNES for me. Closely followed by the first N64 outing, which might have won were it not for the infuriating camera π. I need to dig in to the other games properly at some point, and have almost pressed 'BUY' on GenkiVideoGames, on the SFC games that never made it here quite a few times π
Played the Link To The Past Randomiser for the first time a few weeks back and it was quite possibly the most fun 7 hours of gaming I'd had in a Very Long Timeβ’ - not sure I could stomach one of the 3D Zelda randomisers though... I'll perhaps do the Soul Blazer one next π
The last SMK hack I played (years back) altered the track layouts but didn't change the CPU pathfinding from the original track layouts so that was fun π definitely gonna give this a try when I get home later!
No, but I did butcher my USA SNES cart slot, and then my USA N64 cart slot to be able to play JP games, back in t' day, as they say. Stanley knife modding FTW π
Still remember going to my school mate's house, 30-something years ago, to buy his Game Boy from him, with Tetris, and Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle, for Β£65 (which was four week's paper round money for me π). Great days indeed.
Ahhh, I remember Street Racer on the SNES causing a bit of a "how the heck have they done this" thing back in the day as it had four players' worth of tracks doing the fancy Mode 7 rotating/scaling without any additional processors on the cart π
@UK_Kev it was on Call Lane, and the shop was up a flight of stairs, the name of the shop escapes me but their adverts were always black print on a yellow background and they had a bee/wasp logo on the ad.
I got my imported copy from a shop in Leeds along with Donkey Kong Country and was supposed to have both the games for Christmas but the reviews were so glowing I started playing Final Fantasy before Christmas hit. It is still my favourite Final Fantasy, and the music still blows me away, especially "Dancing Mad," and the 20 minute long end theme. A full on remake/remaster would be most welcome.
Still have my Robotrek cart sat in the pile, I did enjoy what I played of it, but never saw it through to the end. As for the others, Actraiser and Soul Blazer get playthroughs at least a couple of times a year, I love em to bits, the others in the Quad/Pentalogy not so much. I had Granstream Saga a few years back and found it quite interesting. Not least for the fact everyone's character model was faceless π
I used to love Cannon Fodder on the GBC. It was a perfectly miniaturised version of the Amiga classic, with a pre-rendered intro and a swanky 3d menu system (not sure if the menu used realtime 3d or craftily pre-rendered stuff but it impressed me at the time)
For me, the SNES. Loved the NES and all that beforehand and all that has come after, but the SNES gave me my first ever launch day console purchase, my first foray in to importing games, my first gaming magazine (Super Play), the first time I had cash to enjoy buying more than one game a month, my first ever imported console, a fair bit of kudos at school to say I was the uber geek (not as good a thing Back In The Dayβ’, looking back) and a ridiculous amount of other things, on top of the fact that there are a frankly silly amount of good games for the machine, a lot of which still shine nowadays as the classics they are, or in various other gaming halls such as speedrunning. I do enjoy seeing all those games I grew up with being disassembled in the most beautiful ways as an adult, by the speedrunning community. So yeah. The SNES.
Bloody love Shadowrun on the SNES. Didn't like the fact my PAL copy wouldn't hold its save files when playing it on my USA SNES though π was also pleasantly surprised by the cheat code thing that surfaced a while back, involving standing under a lamppost and pressing a button combo. Where was THAT when I needed it as a teenager????π
Played the arcade version to death as a teenager during my college years. Didn't really play it during the PS1 era as I was all Nintendo, with my import USA SNES and N64, and my friends who had a PS1 hadn't bought it. When I finally played the PS version I didn't like it at first π but grew to love it over time. The 60fps Hi Spec version that came with RR Type 4 was nice and shiny though.
Loved this game. I'll probably never forget the moment where the music fades off, as a hulking great big areoplane comes crashing head on toward you on one of the tracks. Pretty sure I almost soiled myself first time it happened.
Oooh. Looks like this might appeal to an old bugger like me who spent far too much of his paper round while at school money/part time job while at college money on import SNES games as a kid π
