This is actually the second attempt of porting Heretic to the Jaguar. There was a first attempt by Stormworks Interactive, which looked pretty far along but production stopped suddenly at some point.
@samuelvictor The only Bubsy game from the old era i consider decent is the first entry. The Jaguar entry has really good music by Imagitec Design but good lord the enemy placement can be downright just evil.
I've heard somewhat decent things about the two more recent Bubsy entries but nothing outstanding either. If somebody can make a Bubsy game that legit looks like a 90s cartoon then i would down with that
Compared to other entries in the Atari Recharged series, it doesn't look too Bad, although i like that we are getting an enhanced edition for the 2600.
It really makes you wonder if we'll see a new edition of, say, Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar, featuring the tracks that were featured in the OST CD that were cut from the final release due to memory constrains.
@Sketcz I played some 3DO games via the Phoenix Project emulator. I really enjoyed Burning Soldier, Road Rash, Icebreaker, and Immercenary, to name a few
It's a pretty decent list of games. Too bad Bound High, despite being 100% complete, didn't make it. It's legit one of top 3 VB games along with Wario Land and Jack Bros.
This is just insane! We are so close to having Jaguar Voice Modem support integrated in BigPEmu for online play in Ultra Vortek. I hope for Rich Whitehouse the best in his future endeavors
If MKII can get a 3DO port, so can the Atari Jaguar... right. Hell, the Jaguar was set to have MK1 and MK3 ports. I do hope both the 3DO and Jaguar homebrew scenes get to work on MK1, MK2, and MK3 ports soon enough
@RetroGames Things are looking up for the SNES homebrew scene so, maybe in the future we'll see a SGDk equivalent for the platform to ease game development on the platform. On the flipside, i don't understand why developers won't take some time to learn other programming languages :/
I mean, that's what Bitmap Bureau are doing with porting Xeno Crisis to other platforms, and that should be commendable
Solid list of games! I will also give shoutouts to Solaris, Turmoil, Secret Quest, Klax (2600), Commando (7800), Ballblazer (7800), Halo 2600 (homebrew), Princess Rescue (homebrew), Zippy the Porcupine (homebrew), Rikki & Vikki (homebrew), and Dragonstomper
That's pretty cool and all, but the remaining Big question is if Sunsoft does indeed have a copy of the prototype? They could easily release it via Arcade Archives or by other means.
I was born in 1996. I don't remember when i first experienced video games since i was very little at that time, but i can recall experiencing N64, PS1, Xbox, Dreamcast, GameCube, SNES, GBA, and a Famicom clone (since i am from Venezuela) in the 2000s, due to my family exchanging consoles frequently. When i started collecting games with my dad, we eventually obtained a 2600, Jaguar, TurboGrafx, Virtual Boy, ColecoVision, Intellivision, and other consoles along the way.
Great work as always! I would love to see someday an interview with former Riverhillsoft staffers regarding the making of Doctor Hauzer, probably one of the more unknown but important games on 3DO, given that it launched the career of Level-5 co-founder Akihiro Hino and inspired Keiichiro Toyama to work on horror games including Silent Hill.
Wow, this was a very comprehensive article about the Nuon. Great job! I must also plug a guy called V-SNES, who is currently doing a series or interviews with people who worked on or were planning to make games for the Nuon (https://www.thehelper.net/threads/announcing-untold-nuon-tales.178704/). Perhaps we'll see if BattleSphere for Nuon was indeed going to be a thing or not? Who knows, but it's Worth keeping a eye on it
The planner should donate a copy of the game to Taito SO they can release it, given that they recently released Dankuga (the enhanced edition of Kaiser Knuckle) on the Egret mini. Taito should also release Recalhorn on either the Egret or Arcade Archives.
As Gosokkyu explained on his Twitter, the most likely reason M2 acquired NEC Avenue's portfolio was mainly for Space Fantasy Zone, which is an infamous unreleased game for the PC Engine.
@no_donatello oh don't worry! That one is in the pipeline, since it uses the same network code as another Sega-published DC Game (but i can't quite recall which one was). I'm looking foward to see Bomberman Online being revived, although DC Unreal Tournament is the Big one the DC scene wants to see revived
@JJtheTexan That and if it is a unreleased Game, people will buy them without a second thought. I would pay mad cash just to see Phear (the original incarnation of Tetrisphere) being released on the Atari Jaguar.
Just a friendly observation: the link to AES Super Bubble Pop takes You to the page for Jaguar Switchblade II. It needs to be revised
@samuelvictor at least we can thanks Hasbro Interactive (plus the active campaigning by the BattleSphere devs and fans) that the Jaguar became public domain. I wish more homebrew devs jump to the Jaguar scene. I actually had two Jaguar back when i was younger in the 2000s and 2010s, because i wanted to play Rayman but i ended up getting sucked into the Jaguar scene in the end XD
I would say the Jaguar does still have its exclusive library of good games like Iron Soldier 1 and 2, BattleSphere and BattleSphere Gold, Power Drive Rally, Super Burnout, Defender 2000, Breakout 2000, Zero 5, Hyper Force, Skyhammer, Protector and Protector SE, the janky Ultra Vortek, and Battlemorph, as well as homebrew games like Rebooteroids.
To give my two cents on the matter, i think homebrew games and especially unreleased games should be preserved as well. Homebrew games are a testament of the fans' love towards a particular platform, while unreleased games should be a top priority, given that the existing builds are literal time bomb waiting in line for the dreaded bit rot.
@Sketcz Well Jaguar Bubsy not only looks good, it also has an unusually good soundtrack by Imagitec's then in-house composers Kevin Saville and Alastair Lindsay. Not surprising since they're the T2K guys, while Lindsay would compose for I-War on Jaguar as well.
Very good selection of games in this list! AVP, Rayman, Iron Soldier, T2K, and Missile Command 3D are some of my favorite titles on the Jaguar. I would also recommend checking out Hyper Force, Asteroite (homebrew), Rebooteroids (homebrew), Kings of Edom (homebrew), World Tour Racing (much better than Checkered Flag), just to name a few of the Jaguar's limited library. (P.S: i just also remembered Super Burnout! Great Racing game as well)
OK that's cool and all, but they should talk with Rich Whitehouse and Digital Eclipse to license BigPEmu for a module compatible with Jaguar and Jaguar CD games. Jaguar and Jaguar CD units are becoming increasingly difficult to find in the wild. So unless anybody comes with a cycle-accurate FPGA solution, a Jaguar game module would be welcomed. Just giving my two cents in this regard...
For me, these are the 10 ones i'm looking foward the most: Former Dawn (NES), Wyvern Tales 2 (Jaguar), Fomula V (VB), Elevated Speed (VB), Rex Nobilis (SNES), Dottie Flowers (SNES), ZPF (SMD), Bio Evil (SMD), Goodboy Galaxy (GBA), and Mudfight! (N64)
This is the kind of stuff i come for this website! Great all-around interview and i hope to see more. Just a reader suggestion, but i would love to see interview with devs who worked on games for ill-fated platforms ir obscure releases. Either way, i'll keep checking out the website from time to time
I do hope that Hamster are able to brind obscure Konami releases like Overdrive and Gaiapolis, or heck even complete but unreleased games like those on the Neo Geo library (namely Last Odyssey, Warlocks of Fate, etc.)
I wish Famibe No Yosshi someday releases Cho Ren Sha 68K (but now under the version 1.10 banner) on modern platforms. More people deserve to play one of the best (if not the best) doujin shooters ever made!
It may be an stupid idea, but i would love seeing Bitmap Books tackle the Atari Jaguar, it's history and the games someday. Still, the PC Engine book looks real nice, but i will still argue that the Metal Slug book might be their best work to date!
Legend is a pretty decent game. My dad (RIP) played it via emulation and enjoyed it. I still wish that Conan demo Arcade Zone was working for the Atari Jaguar surfaces one day. The game looked extremely promising with its huge sprites
Those that say that Nintendo is the only one that matters are completely in the wrong. Looking, reading, playing and learning each gaming platform under the sun will give you a very broad overview of the gaming landscape up until now. Everybody has learned from the efforts of another. Look at Nintendo for christ sake! If it wasn't for the ColecoVision, we would have never gotten the NES.
Well, i don't like being a bearer of bad news and especially on this site, but apparently people on Twitter immediatedly spotted that the cover art for the Duke Nukem 1 & 2 Remasters is a product generated by AI.
The quote retweets that i've seen are frankly vile and malicious behavior. Threatening Tim with robbing his house just for a video game. "His safety be damned, i want to play the game", that must be the mentality some of the people quote tweeting him have.
Since we're talking about the XBAND, i gotta mention the excellent documentary by Wrestling With Gaming, featuring interviews with former Catapult Entertainment devs who worked on the service back in the day. Great article as always
@BulkSlash To be honesto, the game's mix of 2D and 3D reminded me of Dolphin Blue, which which is currently the last game made by the Metal Slug team after the original SNK imploded in 2001-2002. So, it has been more or less 21 years since we have seen any Nazca member make a Metal Slug successor.
@mike_intv @RetroGames I'm confident we'll see a SNES port of Xeno Crisis sooner or later. Keep in mind that Bitmap Bureau are a indie team and they are likely making these other ports as exercises to learn the hardware of each platform.
@Stocksy so a game that cannot run on GameCube doesn't count, Even though BB are providing the DOL file to make it run with the GC Loader?
They are dead serious in porting Xeno Crisis to whatever console is capable of running it! They also confirmed in a magazine interview that PS1 and GBA versions are nearing completion, and BB are eyeing other platforms as well.
Here are the remaining vintage consoles (that i know of) that can possibly run Xeno Crisis without mangling Henk Nieborg's artwork: Amiga, Atari Falcon, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, PS2, Xbox, SNES and PC Engine.
