With over 100 engineers at it's peak, Coleco never saw that tape zapper of a printer would be an issue until it's release? I do wonder if the problems were fixed before hand. Considering how the SG-1000 and the ColecoVision are nearly the same system, and how the Sega Mark III (Master System) was able to play SG-1000 games; could the Master System had a chance to be more successful in North America if it had backwards compatibly with the ColecoVision?
@MysticX For the most part, yes. Keep in mind that the US was the birth place for video games as a whole. Ralph Baer, Allan Alcorn, Nolan Bushnell, Ted Dabney, are/were all Americans. It possible if the sparks didn't reach Japan and Europe, video games as a whole would still be a side part of the computer industry rather than a medium of it's own.
While I think calling it a "crash" is an overstatement, I do think it was for the better as it avoided video games from becoming like movies where Hollywood is THE center of the industry and being completely dominated by a single country.
I don't think the industry would of COMPLETELY disappeared like the history said it avoided, but I do think that wouldn't be the cultural juggernaut it is today for better and worse.
@MysticX I think one of the reasons why this happened is that RAM was expensive, slow, and low in size (CDs could hold 650 MB at a time when most computers had only a small percentage of that in RAM and Hard Drive space).
I think the ColecoVision confusion is because of the existence of the Dina 2 in One. A weird Taiwanese console that could play both ColecoVision and SG-1000 games. The craziest thing is that it was sold in the US, despite the SG-1000 never launching there!
God I wish that Microsoft would allow Activision to re-release their 2600 games again. A 2600 without Activision is like an NES without Capcom or a PS1 without Squaresoft.
Kind of hoping Microsoft is willing to play ball with Atari to allow classic Activision games to be re-released. The 2600 without Activision is like an NES without Capcom.
@GhaleonUnlimited That's kind of the most bitter part about copyright. The owner has the right to not do anything with it. Sucks, but I as I like to say, "Don't blame Mickey, blame (Captain) Nemo"
My personal opinion is that Victor is an old man who is burnt out by all the contact negotiations and backstabs of the 90's. Could also be that he's wary of some of the lesser "remasters" and "remakes" and fears that HIS visions of the WD games could be removed/replaced. Sometimes you just have to hope that Ireland's kids are much more willing to put down a deal than their old man.
Reminder that AI should be used as a TOOL, not a replacement for artists or a magic wand. Thankfully, this looks more like a case of the latter. But I doubt bigger companies will actually see it this way.
TBH, E.T. wasn't that bad of a game (Though it really forced you to read the manual, which many people then and now don't do), but the problem was that the game had WAY too many copies made. Reminder that 1982 was also the same year that Atari made more 2600 Pac-Man carts than there were consoles sold. E.T. was just the knockout blow when Atari was taking blows from both it's competitors and itself.
Side note, The Henry Ford actually has a few items from the landfill on display, as seen here:
I (and many many others) wish that Popful Mail and other Working Designs games were available on the Sega Genesis Mini 2. Question is, why hasn't Victor reached out to get the game re-licenced?
(Side note, has anyone dug into who voiced what in the English version and see if they have done any work since then?)
@Daggot Currently, his plans is to cultivate the ecosystem of his Commander X16. Basically, this sort of a "What if" computer that Commodore could of made instead of the Amiga. Developer units have been made and shipped to creators and programmers, with a more consumer model in the pipeline.
@mike_intv The problem was actually with the PC side, it was painfully out of date when it came out in 1993. A 386 machine was slow as hell compared to the 486's and early Pentiums. The chip was soldered to the Motherboard thus making it nearly impossible to upgrade.
Also, the Teradrive was much more impressive seeing that both sides of the computer (Mega Drive and IBM) could communicate with the other. I think some where used as developer kits, IIRC.
I'm going to bet that the screen might need to be replaced and it's possible that it might be moved to that Nintendo Museum that's opening in Japan in the next few years.
What's even more surprising is how well cooled the machine is when running. You would think it would be a fire hazard (Though to be fair, the power supply that was in this thing was one) but it actually is quite well ventilated. Though it being an older system, those don't run as hot as modern PCs.
On the topic of LGR, my personal favorite video of his is when he redeemed a (then at the time) 20 year old pizza coupon from a Red Baron flight game.
Personally, I feel like it would be the best if he did allow someone to archive the games, just to be on the safe side. Maybe not publicly, but to like the Video Game History Foundation for safe keeping.
What's more impressive is that SNES Doom wasn't originally playable on XBAND in the 90's. The Main programmer of the SNES port actually helped out to make it possible! On top of that the Sega Saturn Netlink (Which used the XBAND software) also is online as well. If you look into how it's done, it's basically doing on the fly ROM hacks to make it possible. Crazy stuff.
I do wonder if the Merry-Go-Round music is considered to be under copyright. The songs are in the public domain, but the exact soundtrack is a recording of a real live Merry-go-Round that was pressed onto a record.
Still great to see that OpenRCT2 is slowly becoming its own game like it's older brother in OpenTTD has a decade before.
Leave it to Square Enix to develop a text based adventure game with a dumber input system than Zork. Don't let that sink in, let all the plumbing in first.
This is the first time since January 30th 2019 (The day the Wii Shop Channel closed) that this game would be legally playable once again. So yea, very welcome news to those wondering what Game Freak was like before Pokemon.
@Zenszulu Indeed. Outside of Atlus, nearly all Sega studios that have been bought since the Sega Sammy Merger in 2004 are in Sega of Europe's handling. (Rovio is planned to become part of SoE, according to the documents)
@RetroGames I would say good. This puts a very well known IP under Sega's belt, expands the capabilities of their Europe branch, brings in nearly 500+ well trained developers, and gives them a notable increase in the mobile marketplace. It's also possible that Sega would try to fix some of the PR shipwrecks Rovio has been making in the last year or so.
People need to remember that the Sega Saturn outsold the N64 in Japan by quite a bit. There's also a whole lot of games that haven't been ported to any modern consoles either. The question now becomes: Will they make an American version of the system at all?
You know, this COULD actually work. Make it more about the people behind the game and also make it a Late Cold War Thriller? Both the History and Gamer side of me are interested,
@AtlanteanMan It wasn't that Sega forgot to add copy protection, it's more like that one scene from the Simpsons where Mr Burns goes though a whole labyrinth of security, only to have a broken spring door in the back.
@GamingBread That's because the base system already exists and been out for a while. @Westlondonmist At least with Evercade, they give a valid reason for the delay, instead of blaming Covid or whatever.
